The Failure of Mass Democracy | Lecture by theologian Rowan Williams (Lezing)

"Trumps verkiezingscampagne was volkomen inhoudsloos, en enkel bedoeld om mensen voor zich te winnen. Zijn verkiezing tot president laat zien hoe de politiek is veranderd in een cynische vorm van theater." De beroemde Britse theoloog Rowan Williams windt er geen doekjes om: "We moeten af van het neo-Sovjet gepraat over "Het Volk" en haar zogenaamde wil. In plaats daarvan moeten we investeren in discussie en besluitvorming binnen lokale gemeenschappen."

Ontevredenheid

De verkiezing van Trump en de opkomst van het populisme in Europa wordt, aldus Williams, inderdaad veroorzaakt door het feit dat veel mensen zich ontevreden, niet gehoord en onzeker voelen. Politici van zowel linkse als rechtse partijen hebben dat onvoldoende begrepen. Maar het probleem zit dieper.

Het verraad

Populistische politici doen wel zo alsof ze het opnemen voor de mensen die zich niet gezien voelen, maar in feite plegen ze juist een cynische vorm van verraad. Door het afbrokkelen van vrijheden en economische mogelijkheden nemen mensen geen deel meer aan werkelijke politieke processen maar kunnen alleen nog 'hun koning kiezen'.

Toekomst

De politiek van de massademocratie heeft gefaald. Het is een mechanisme geworden dat enkel de belangen van rijke commerciële organisaties dient. Het is de hoogste tijd dat we wakker worden en gaan streven naar een authentieke en humane vorm van politiek.

Na zijn lezing gaat Rowan Williams in gesprek met theologen Joshua Furnal en Ellen van Wolde van de Radboud Universiteit.

Rowan Williams is theoloog en dichter. Daarnaast was hij van 2002 tot 2012 aartsbisschop van de Anglicaanse kerk. Recente publieksboeken van zijn hand zijn God ontmoeten in Paulus (2017), Kies het leven (2015) en Geloof in de publieke ruimte (2013).

Joshua Furnal is docent Systematische theologie aan de Radboud Universiteit. Hij is met name geïnteresseerd in de invloed van moderne filosofie op katholieke theologie en het snijvlak van katholiek denken en hedendaagse cultuur.

Ellen van Wolde is hoogleraar Bronteksten van Jodendom en Christendom aan de Radboud Universiteit en lid van de KNAW. Haar onderzoek richt zich op denkbeelden over het begin van het universum, over God en over mensen.

“Trump’s campaign was just an incoherent series of crowd-pleasing postures, and his election signifies how politics has turned into mass theatre. The only thing that matters, is the declaration of victory.” The eminent British theologian Rowan Williams states that we should get rid of the neo-Soviet talk about something called “The People” and its supposed will. Instead, we need a better analysis of and investment in local civic activism. What can we do to nurture discussion and decision-making in the actual communities to which people (not The People) belong?

Dissatisfaction

The election of Trump and the rise of populism in Europe is indeed, according to Williams, caused by the fact that many people feel discontented, disenfranchised, and insecure. And yes, conventional politicians of the right and the left have failed to understand this. But the problem goes deeper.

Betrayal of the marginalized

In fact, current political developments are the most cynical betrayal of those who are disenfranchised. By the erosion of liberties and economic opportunities, they have become detached from the work of politics. They have no part in real political processes; they can only choose their monarch. The politics of mass democracy has failed and turned into a mechanism for managing large-scale interests of well-resourced commercial concerns. It’s time to wake up.

After his lecture, Rowan Williams will discuss his theological point of view with theologians Joshua Furnal and Ellen van Wolde of Radboud University.

About the speakers

Rowan Williams is a renowned British theologian and poet, Master of Magdalene College in Cambridge, and the former Archbishop of Canterbury. He has a longstanding involvement with social issues and published extensively about e.g. politics, the free market and terrorism. Among his recent popular works are Being Disciples (2016), Faith in the Public Square (2015) and The Edge of Words (2014). He is an honorary doctor of Radboud University.

Joshua Furnal teaches systematic theology at Radboud University. He is particularly interested in modern philosophical engagement with Catholic theology and the intersection between Catholic thought and contemporary culture.

Ellen van Wolde teaches Old Testament exegesis at Radboud University. She is a member of KNAW. Her research focuses on ideas about the beginning of the universe, about God and about people.
