Western philosophy is stunningly silent on colonialism and imperialism. The American philosopher Amy Allen thinks Critical Theory is to blame. Critical Theory, like other versions of European theory more generally, espouses a false universalism that assumes and incorporates the inequality of races and the subordination of inferior cultures. Come and learn why Amy Allen thinks we need to decolonialize our thinking.

Progress

The Critical theory can be defined as the self-clarification of the struggles and wishes of the age. The justification and grounding of this theory lies in the idea of historical progress, development and social evolution. The same ideas that justified colonialism and imperialism. So it’s only possible to take into consideration colonialism and racism if we break with the underlying ideas of progress.

New foundations

If we want our thinking to be truly critical, then we should frame our conceptual framework with an eye toward decolonial and anti-imperialist struggles and concerns. We can no longer rely on ideas of historical development and progress to ground normativity. Amy Allen argues that critical theory’s approach to grounding normativity must be radically transformed if it is to decolonize itself and thus be truly critical.

Amy Allen is Liberal Arts Research Professor of Philosophy and head of the Philosophy Department at Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of The Power of Feminist Theory: Domination, Resistance, Solidarity and The Politics of Our Selves: Power, Autonomy, and Gender in Contemporary Critical Theory, and she is the editor of the Columbia University Press series New Directions in Critical Theory.

Katrine Smiet is a philosopher at Radboud University. Her research focuses on feminism and intersectionality.

Kolonialisme en imperialisme zijn een blinde vlek in de Westerse filosofie. Om echt kritisch naar het postkolonialisme te kijken en oog te hebben voor racisme, ongelijkheid en superieur denken ten opzichte van andere culturen moet er iets veranderen aan de grondslagen van een belangrijke en invloedrijke stromingen in de Westerse filosofie: de kritische theorie. Dit stelt de Amerikaanse filosoof Amy Allen. Kom luisteren hoe zij zich de dekolonisatie van de kritische theorie voorstelt.

Vooruitgang

De kritische theorie staat er op voor om kritisch naar de strijden en wensen van de maatschappij te kijken. Volgens Amy Allen is het geen toeval dat deze theorie geen ruimte heeft voor post-kolonialisme en anti-imperialisme. De normatieve basis van de kritische theorie is namelijk het vooruitgangsdenken.

Het moderne verlichte Europa is gebaseerd op de idealen van ontwikkeling, leren en vooruitgang. We staan ons er op voor dat we ons ontwikkeld hebben van een traditionele samenleving tot een moderne samenleving. Door het idee dat het Westen zich meer ontwikkelde dan andere delen van de wereld was het imperialisme en het kolonialisme denkbaar.

Nieuwe grondslagen

De kritische theorie kan volgens Amy Allen niet langer gefundeerd worden in dit vooruitgangsideaal, dat juist ten grondslag ligt aan het kolonialisme en imperialisme. Amy Allen pleit dan ook voor een dekolonialisatie van de kritische theorie. Waarbij er een nieuwe normatieve basis wordt gekozen. Het is volgens Amy Allen tijd voor het einde van de vooruitgang.

Na haar lezing gaat Amy Allen in gesprek over de vraag hoe een invloedrijke kritische filosofische stroming blind kan zijn voor zo’n belangrijke hedendaagse discussie.
