What does the way in which we live our lives together have to do with economics? “Everything” states the Italian political economist Luigino Bruni. He signifies a growing tendency to organize friendships and other social contacts according to principles that traditionally belong to the market: we plan and schedule our appointments and make the clearest possible arrangements. This prevents us from being hurt and allows us to satisfy our needs without having to depend on the love of others. Come and listen how Bruni pleads for a revaluation of vulnerability.

Contracts

We turn our social relationships into contracts, states Luigino Bruni. While a contract is clear, it is also impersonal and anonymous. Contracts are fine for economic relationships, but treating friendships like market contracts is insufficient and dangerous.

Loneliness

We can see the results of this development in our everyday lives, states Bruni. The growing loneliness and misery of our affluent economies tell us that we are on the wrong track. We long for warm and personal interactions, particularly with those we love. Bruni therefore pleads for a revaluation of vulnerability. “The positive and negative sides of life go hand in hand: if we ban the risk of being hurt, we also lose the beauty of relationships.”

Economic relationships

According to Bruni, this is true not only for personal relationships, but for economic ones as well: if market relationships would be more personal and less anonymous, it would enhance our vulnerability, but it would also increase our happiness.

About the speaker

Luigino Bruniis a professor of Political Economy at Bocconi University in Milan. His books include The Wound and the Blessing: Economics, Relationships and Happiness (2012), the award-winning Civil Happiness: Economics and Human Flourishing in Historical Perspective (2005), and The Economy of Communion (2001).

We maken van onze sociale relaties een soort contracten, stelt Luigino Bruni. Een contract is helder, maar ook anoniem en onpersoonlijk. Contracten werken prima voor economische relaties, maar als we onze vriendschappen op dezelfde manier benaderen, worden ze onpersoonlijk en afstandelijk.

Eenzaamheid

Door deze ontwikkeling voelen steeds meer mensen zich eenzaam, stelt Bruni. We willen juist wél een warm en persoonlijk contact, zeker met de mensen die ons dierbaar zijn. Hij pleit dan ook voor een herwaardering van kwetsbaarheid. “Want de mooie en de negatieve kanten van het leven horen bij elkaar: als we het risico om gekwetst te worden uitbannen, lopen we ook de mooie kanten van relaties mis.”

Handelsrelaties

Dit pleidooi houdt Luigino Bruni niet alleen voor persoonlijke relaties, maar juist ook voor de economie: wanneer ook handelsrelaties persoonlijker en minder anoniem zouden zijn, zou dat weliswaar de kwetsbaarheid vergroten, maar ons ook in alle opzichten gelukkiger maken.
