It is high time for a reappraisal of African philosophy. But to appreciate something you first need to get to know it. What is African philosophy? Come and learn from French-Ivorian philosopher Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux why African philosophy is first and foremost a relational philosophy.

Relations

As Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux tells it, not just the individual person, but relationships are central in African philosophies. Relationality is a key concept for understanding different comprehensions of justice, economy and ethics. You see this relationality reflected in philosophical concepts such as Ubuntu, Palabre and Gacaca.

Ubuntu, Palabre and Gacaca

Ubuntu, Palabre and Gacaca play an important role in African philosophy. Ubuntu stands for connection between everything, for commitment and dedication between people and a social way of thinking. Palabre and Gacaca are ways of dealing with conflict in communities by communicating with each other. They are alternative ways to  process and try to solve conflict with open dialogues and an open exchange of opinions. This way the relationships within communities are restored.

African philosophy

After her lecture Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux will discuss with philosopher Philippe van Haute the differences between African and Western philosophy and their influence on each other.

Speakers

Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux is a French philosopher and researcher at Paris 8 University. She is the author of Philosophies africaines and co-editor of Droit et colonisation. She is a former editor-in-chief on the culture desk at Jeune Afrique, and is currently a journalist for Le Monde and Le Monde Afrique.

Philippe van Haute is a philosophical anthropologist at the Center for Contemporary European Philosophy at Radboud University. Amongst other things, he is the author of Freud als filosoof and A non-oedipal psychoanalysis?

Het is tijd voor een herwaardering van Afrikaanse filosofie. Maar om deze te kunnen waarderen moeten we er eerst meer over weten. Wat is Afrikaanse filosofie? Kom en leer van de Frans-Ivoriaanse filosofe Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux dat Afrikaanse filosofie vooral een relationele filosofie is.

Relaties

Volgens Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux staat binnen de Afrikaanse filosofie niet alleen het individu maar ook de onderlinge relaties tussen mensen centraal. Relationaliteit is het centrale concept om ideeën over rechtvaardigheid, economie en ethiek te begrijpen. Deze relationaliteit komt terug in filosofische begrippen als Ubuntu, Palabre en Gacaca.

Ubuntu, Palabre en Gacaca

Ubuntu, Palabre en Gacaca spelen een grote rol in Afrikaanse filosofie. Ubuntu staat voor de verbondenheid van alles, toewijding en relaties tussen mensen onderling en voor een sociaal denken. Palabre en Gacaca zijn termen die verbonden zijn aan het oplossen van conflicten door met elkaar in gesprek te gaan. Het gaat om een open dialoog en uitwisseling van ideeën binnen de eigen gemeenschap. Zo zijn Palabre en Gacaca bedoeld om een alternatief te bieden voor een rechtsgang en de harmonie binnen gemeenschappen te herstellen.

Afrikaanse filosofie

Na haar lezing gaat Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux in gesprek met filosoof Philippe van Haute van de Radboud Universiteit over de verschillen tussen de Westerse en Afrikaanse filosofie en de invloed die ze op elkaar hebben. Onze Westerse filosofie staat niet los van de Afrikaanse filosofie, maar is er zelfs schatplichtig aan.

Over de sprekers

Séverine Kodjo-Grandvaux is filosoof en onderzoeker aan de Paris 8 University. Ze is auteur van Philosophies africaines en mederedacteur van Droit et colonisation. Ze is een voormalig hoofdredacteur van de Cultuurbalie bij Jeune Afrique. Tegenwoordig is ze journalist voor Le Monde en Le Monde Afrique.

Philippe van Haute is wijsgerig antropoloog bij het Center for Contemporary European Philosophy van de Radboud Universiteit. Hij is auteur van onder andere Freud als filosoof.
