Why can we reflect and why do we have consciousness? How did we come to have minds? According to the American philosopher Daniel Dennett, mind and consciousness are no more and no less mysterious than other natural phenomena. Come listen to Daniel Dennett and learn all about his view on our minds and evolution.

Social animals

Humans are profoundly social animals and hence need to be able to communicate, cooperate and compete with their fellows. This requires the ability to think, remember, plan, empathize—in a word, to have a mind. Minds require large and complex brains to enable and sustain them, all generated by natural selection.

Natural selection

In From Bacteria to Bach and Back Daniel Dennett builds on ideas from computer science and biology to show how a comprehending mind could in fact have arisen from a mindless process of natural selection. Granted the right chemical and physical conditions, life forms will evolve large-brained organisms with a mind like that of humans. Dennett considers natural selection as an Intelligent Designer, constantly improving life forms through blind Darwinian processes that favor fitter, better adapted variants.

Minds

For centuries the question about the origin of our minds has intrigued scientists. They have wondered how the human mind developed its unrivaled ability to create, imagine, and explain. Dennett argues that there isn’t anything magical or mysterious about our minds. While they are just a natural phenomenon, that doesn’t make them less unique.

After his lecture Daniel Dennett will have a discussion with philosopher Jolien Francken from Radboud University and there will be time for questions from the audience.  Dennett will also be available to sign copies of his book From Bacteria to Bach and Back, that will be for sale in our bookstand.

Daniel Dennett is an world-famous American philosopher who has written multiple books on mind, consciousness, free will, evolution, religion and artificial intelligence. In 2012 he received the prestigious Erasmusprijs. He is professor and co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University. On Thursday 18th October he will receive an honorary doctorate from Radboud University.

De bekende Amerikaanse cognitiefilosoof Daniel Dennett meent dat onze mind niet geheimzinniger is dan andere natuurlijke fenomenen. Alle levensvormen kunnen er volgens hem een ontwikkelen. Kom luisteren naar deze wereldberoemde denker en leer hoe hij tegen de mind en evolutie aankijkt.

Sociale dieren

Mensen zijn sociale dieren. Om te kunnen communiceren, samenwerken en concurreren met elkaar, hebben wij het vermogen nodig om te kunnen denken, herinneren, plannen en meevoelen met anderen, oftewel we hebben een mind nodig. En minds hebben op hun beurt weer grote complexe breinen nodig, die allemaal zijn verkregen door natuurlijke selectie.

Natuurlijke Selectie

Daniel Dennett gebruikt in zijn nieuwe boek From Bacteria to Bach and Back: the Evolution of Minds inzichten uit de computerwetenschap en de biologie om te laten zien hoe de mind kan zijn ontstaan door natuurlijke selectie. Als je maar de juiste chemische en fysische omstandigheden hebt, kan al het leven een mind ontwikkelen. Dennett vat natuurlijke selectie op als een Intelligent Designer, die continue levensvormen verbetert door het blinde Darwiniaanse proces van voorrang geven aan de fittere en beter aangepaste varianten.

Minds

De vraag naar de menselijke minds wordt al eeuwen gesteld door wetenschappers, maar vaak in de meer religieuze gedaante als “ziel”. Dennett betoogt dat er weinig bovennatuurlijk is aan onze minds, maar daarom zijn ze niet minder uniek.

Na zijn lezing gaat Daniel Dennett in gesprek met filosoof Jolien Francken van de Radboud Universiteit. Zij modereert ook enkele vragen uit de zaal. Na afloop signeert Dennett zijn boek From Bacteria to Bach and Back dat deze avond te koop is.

Daniel Dennett is een Amerikaanse filosoof die talrijke publicaties op zijn naam heeft staan. Hij denkt en schrijft onder meer over mind, bewustzijn, vrije wil, evolutie, religie en kunstmatige intelligentie. Dennett ontving in 2012 de Erasmusprijs. Hij is hoogleraar en co-director van het Center for Cognitive Studies aan Tufts University. Hij ontvangt op donderdag 18 oktober 2018 een eredoctoraat van de Radboud Universiteit.

Honorary Doctorate

Daniel Dennett is in Nijmegen because of the 95th anniversary of Radboud University.
The world-renowned philosopher Prof. Daniel Dennett, classical scholar Prof. Mary Beard, ecologist Prof. Stephen Pacala and writer Jeroen Brouwers will receive an honorary doctorate from Radboud University on 18 October 2018. The doctoral award ceremony will take place during the academic ceremony in honour of Radboud University’s 95th anniversary, its Dies Natalis, in the St. Stevenskerk in Nijmegen.
