Too Many people? Ethics and Population in the 21st Century | Lecture by moral philosopher Peter Singer (Lezing)

We moeten het taboe doorbreken rond overbevolking, stelt de Australische ethicus Peter Singer. Dat is de enige manier om honger de wereld uit te helpen en klimaatveranderingen tegen te gaan. Regeringen en non-profit organisaties zouden overbevolking mee moeten nemen als ze bepalen welke acties tegen honger of klimaatverandering ethisch gerechtvaardigd zijn. Taboe

Beperken van de bevolkingsgroei zou beter zijn voor arme en overbevolkte gebieden. Niet alleen voor inwoners, maar ook voor de biodiversiteit en ook voor het aanpakken van de klimaatverandering.
Maar als witte westerlingen Afrikaanse, Aziatische en Latijns-Amerikaanse landen gaan vertellen hoeveel kinderen er geboren mogen worden dan neigt dit al snel naar racisme en kolonialisme. Toch vindt Peter Singer het belangrijk om het taboe te doorbreken en bevolkinsbeperking bespreekbaar te maken. Dat er een taboe is onder wetenschappers en politici betekent niet dat we ons geen zorgen hoeven te maken over bevolkingsgroei.

The Population Bomb

Het is dit jaar vijftig jaar geleden dat Paul Ehrlich zijn controversiële en invloedrijke boek The Population Bomb schreef. Dit boek zette bevolkingsaantallen op de internationale agenda. Tegelijkertijd zorgden de alarmerende voorspellingen over grote hongersnoden ook deels voor het taboe dat we nu kennen om het over bevolkingsaantallen te hebben.

Te veel mensen

De wereldwijde bevolkingsgroei is aan het afnemen; toch voorspelt de VN dat er in 2100 in enkele van de armste Afrikaanse landen vijf keer zoveel mensen wonen dan nu. Zou het niet beter zijn als de bevolking van deze landen minder hard zou groeien als de VN nu voorspelt? Kunnen er te veel mensen zijn? De gespreksleider van deze avond is Maïté Tjon A Hie.

Spreker

Peter Singer is een wereldberoemde ethicus. Hij is hoogleraar Biotethics aan Princeton University en emeritus hoogleraar aan de University of Melbourne. Hij werd bekend met zijn boek Animal Liberation over dierenethiek en is de oprichter van de anti-armoede organisatie The Life You Can Save.

We should break the taboo and discuss population growth if we want to do something about famines or climate change, according to the influential Australian moral philosopher Peter Singer. These discussions should extend to considering what actions are ethically permissible for governments and non-profit organizations to take to limit growth. Come and learn what Peter Singer’s ideas for limiting population growth imply.

Taboo

Would it be better to limit the population growth? Arguably, it would improve life for people living in poor and overpopulated countries, for biodiversity, and for our chances of avoiding catastrophic climate change. It can seem racist or colonialist for affluent white male population control advocates to tell African, Asian and Latin American women how many children they should have. Yet the taboo on talking about population control among scientists and policy-makers does not mean that there are no longer any grounds for concern about population growth.

The Population Bomb

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Paul Ehrlich’s controversial and influential book The Population Bomb. That book became the catalyst for putting concern about population numbers on the global agenda, but its alarmist prediction of unprecedented famines also bear some of the responsibility for the current taboo on talking about population.

Too many people

Granted, the global rate of population growth is currently falling; yet the UN Population Division predicts that by 2100 several of the poorest African countries are expected to have five times as many people as they do today. Would it be better if the populations of these countries grew more slowly than the UN Population Division is predicting they will grow? Can there be too many people? About the speaker

Peter Singer is a world-famous moral philosopher. He is professor of bioethics at Princeton University and laureate professor at the University of Melbourne.  Among other things, he is the author of Animal Liberation and The Most Good You Can Do and the founder of the anti-poverty organization The Life You Can Save.
