What do TV series like Game of Thrones, Homeland and House of Cards tell us about the world we live in at this moment? Renowned political scientist Dominique Moïsi suggests that TV series like these reflect the geopolitical relations and the dominant emotions of today. Come and learn how TV series form an echo chamber of our current fears.

Emotions

It is mostly fear that script writers see when they look at our society: fear of dictatorship and barbarity as in Game of Thrones, of terrorism as in Homeland, of the fall of democracy as in House of Cards, of the disappearance of the existing order as in Downtown Abbey, and of a Russian invasion as in Occupied. According to Moïsi these TV series reflect the most dominant emotions we feel today.

Influence

But it goes even further than just reflecting our emotions. Moïsi argues that fiction and reality influence each other and that TV series can change our emotional condition. The same goes for the geopolitical reality they describe. Take for instance the reason why House of Cards is so popular among the Chinese political elite: it reflects their distrust in democracy.

After his lecture Moïsi will be interviewed by philosopher Arjen Kleinherenbrink.

About the speaker

Dominique Moïsi is a renowned French political scientist, an expert on international relations, and laureate of the Spinozalens 2018. He teaches and advises at several institutions, for instance the Institut Montaigne in France, and is one of the founders of Institut français des relations internationales. Moïsi has written several well-received books, among others The Geopolitics of Emotions (2009) and La géopolitique des séries (2016). The Dutch translation of the last book will appear this November.

Arjen Kleinherenbrink works at Radboud University. Following his dissertation he wrote the book Alles is een machine. This year he published Avonturen bestaan niet, which he wrote together with philosopher Simon Gusman.

Scenarioschrijvers zien vooral angst als ze naar onze samenleving kijken. Angst voor een dictatuur en barbarisme zoals in Game of Thrones, voor terrorisme zoals in Homeland, voor de teloorgang van democratie zoals in House of Cards, voor het verdwijnen van de gevestigde macht zoals in Downtown Abbey en voor een Russische invasie zoals in Occupied. Volgens Moïsi reflecteren deze tv-series op onze meest dominante emoties.

Invloed

Maar het gaat verder dan slechts reflectie. Moïsi stelt dat fictie en realiteit elkaar wederzijds beïnvloeden en dat tv-series onze emotionele toestand kunnen veranderen. Hetzelfde geldt voor de geopolitieke situatie die ze beschrijven. Neem bijvoorbeeld de reden waarom House of Cards zo populair is onder de Chinese politieke elite. Het weerspiegelt hun wantrouwen in het democratisch systeem.

Dominique Moïsi is een gerenommeerde Franse politicoloog, expert op het gebied van internationale betrekkingen en laureaat van de Spinozalens 2018. Hij onderwijst en adviseert bij uiteenlopende wetenschappelijke instituties, zoals het Institut Montaigne in Frankrijk, en is een van de oprichters van Institut français des relations internationales. Moïsi schreef verscheidene goed ontvangen boeken waaronder The Geopolitics of Emotions (2009) and La géopolitique des séries (2016). De Nederlandse vertaling van laatstgenoemde boek verschijnt in november bij Uitgeverij Boom.

Arjen Kleinherenbrink is werkzaam aan de Radboud University. Naar aanleiding van zijn proefschrift schreef hij het boek Alles is een machine. Dit jaar kwam het boek Avonturen bestaan niet uit, dat hij samen met filosoof Simon Gusman schreef.
