Alternative Facts

In a society where alterative facts roam freely, a growing number of people question scientific findings. The facts no longer speak for themselves. How does this development impact the natural sciences? Are all scientific disciplines facing public doubt about their findings? How should researchers deal with a society in which emotion and opinions are becoming more important than objective facts?

Protest or Dialogue

Several scientists are organizing counter protests like the March for Science in order to stress the importance of objective science. Is the pursuit of natural science truly objective and value-free as some researchers believe? Is such a march the proper way to convince the doubtful masses? Could a dialogue between scientists and critical citizens be more fruitful?

Knowledge and Truth

Environmental scientist Heleen de Coninck will speak about her experience engaging critical citizens and skeptic scientists. Noelle Aarts will shed light on public understanding of science, the importance of interpretation of data, and the role of emotions and values in public understanding of science. Together they will think about how natural scientists can best engage concerned citizens.

About the speakers

Heleen de Coninck is associate professor in the Environmental Science department at Radboud University. Her research focuses on international climate policy, energy technology and innovation studies. Previously she worked at the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) and since 2002 she has been involved in the production of several IPCC reports.

Noelle Aarts is professor Socio-ecological Interactions at Radboud University and member of the board of the Institute for Science in Society. Her research studies conversations between stakeholders with different backgrounds and interests on complex issues. She was chosen most inspiring communicator in the Netherlands in 2016 and 2017.

Moeten natuurwetenschappers zich zorgen maken over deze ontwikkelingen? Wat kunnen ze doen om het tij te keren? Kom en luister naar milieuwetenschapper Heleen de Coninck en communicatie-expert Noelle Aarts over publieke twijfel en onenigheid over natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Alternatieve feiten

In een wereld waarin alternatieve feiten vrij spel hebben, groeit het aantal burgers dat de uitkomsten van wetenschappelijk onderzoek in twijfel trekt. De feiten spreker niet langer voor zich. Wat is de invloed van deze ontwikkeling op de natuurwetenschappen? Hebben alle wetenschappelijke disciplines te maken met burgers die de resultaten van hun onderzoek betwisten? En hoe moeten onderzoekers omgaan met een samenleving waarin emoties en meningen belangrijker lijken te worden dan ‘objectieve’ feiten?

Protest of Dialoog

Als tegenreactie organiseerden verschillende wetenschappers protesten zoals de March for Science, om zo het belang van objectieve wetenschap te benadrukken. Maar is de natuurwetenschap wel zo objectief en waardevrij als sommige onderzoekers denken? En is een protestmars de juiste manier om de twijfelende massa te overtuigen? Kan een dialoog tussen kritische burgers en wetenschappers een vruchtbare oplossing zijn voor dit probleem?

Kennis en Waarheid

Milieuwetenschapper Heleen de Coninck vertelt over haar ervaringen met kritische burgers en sceptische wetenschappers. Noelle Aarts laat haar licht schijnen op de verschillende interpretaties van feiten en rol van emoties en waarden in het publiek begrip van de wetenschap. Samen gaan Noelle Aarts en Heleen de Coninck in gesprek over de manieren waarop natuurwetenschappers het beste om kunnen gaan met de kritisch geluiden van bezorgde burgers.

Over de sprekers

Heleen de Coninck is universitair hoofddocent aan de Radboud Universiteit. Zij houdt zich bezig met (internationaal) klimaatbeleid, energietechnologie en innovatiestudies. Ze werkte eerder bij het Energieonderzoek Centrum Nederland in Petten en is sinds 2002 betrokken bij diverse rapporten van het invloedrijke Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Noelle Aartsis hoogleraar Socio-ecological Interactions aan de Radboud Universitei en verbonden aan het Institute for Science in Society. Ze doet onderzoek naar gesprekken tussen stakeholders met verschillende achtergronden en belangen bij complexe thema’s. In 2016 en 2017 werd ze door collega’s verkozen tot de meest inspirerende communicator van Nederland.
