Being able to recognize yourself in media. That is important, but not self-evident for everyone. Too long Western media payed very little attention to diversity in skin color, religion and gender. Why is this important? What is the best way forward? Come and listen to journalist Babah Tarawally about inclusion and diversity in media.

Inclusion first

Media are everywhere, and have a major influence on the lives of nearly everyone. So the importance of inclusion and diversity is this domain is obvious. According to Babah Tarawally, inclusion should always come first: “Inclusion implies that everybody can join in. Starting there enables us to look at a person’s talents. Conversely, if diversity is the starting point, the focus is on differences rather than talents and involving everybody becomes increasingly difficult.”

The Ubuntu perspective

Discussions on the importance of inclusion and diversity are often hindered by the fear of losing certain privileges. Tarawally takes on a different perspective, based on the African Ubuntu philosophy: Ubuntu teaches us that I am because we are. When we understand that we are all individuals in service of a community, our focus moves from the ‘I’ to the group.

Road to improvement

What is the state of Dutch media when it comes to inclusion and diversity? Which practices should be maintained, and which should be improved upon? And what is the ultimate goal of this discussion? As a writer and journalist, Babah Tarawally himself is an important voice in the Dutch media landscape. As the discussion on these topics tends to become one of blame and shame, Tarawally has made it his mission to keep searching for nuance and dialogue.

After a short lecture, Tarawally will discuss the topic in further detail with: 
Nina van Loosen, Hilda Ouraaha and Dejanique Petronilia, Radboud University students who follow the course Managing Diversity in Communication at the Faculty of Arts.

About the speaker

Babah Tarawally is an author, journalist and columnist. He escaped the war violence in Sierra Leone and writes, speaks and organizes events on the role and meaning of cultural differences. During his seven year asylum procedure, he wrote De god met de blauwe ogen (2010). Later on, works like De verloren hand (2016) and Gevangen in zwart-wit denken (2018) followed. Within his work on culture and diversity, the African Ubuntu philosophy plays a key role.

Jezelf kunnen herkennen in de media. Dat is belangrijk, maar is lang niet voor iedereen vanzelfsprekend. Te lang was  er in de westerse media nauwelijks aandacht voor diversiteit in huidskleur, religie of gender. Waarom is dat belangrijk? En hoe kan het anders? Kom luisteren naar schrijver en journalist Babah Tarawally, over inclusie en diversiteit in de media.

Het belang van een voorbeeld

De media is overal, en iedereen komt ermee in contact. Daarom zijn inclusie en diversiteit juist daar van groot belang. Volgens Babah Tarawally heeft inclusie daarbij altijd prioriteit: “Inclusie betekent dat iedereen mee mag doen. Door daar te starten, kun je naar ieders talenten kijken. Als we beginnen bij diversiteit, staan de verschillen centraal en wordt het alleen maar moeilijker om iedereen erbij te laten horen.”

De discussie over het belang van inclusie en diversiteit wordt volgens Tarawally vaak overstemd door de angst om privileges te verliezen. Vanuit de Afrikaanse Ubuntu filosofie heeft hij hier een ander perspectief op. Ubuntu stelt: ik ben omdat wij zijn. Als we inzien dat we allemaal individuen zijn in dienst van een gemeenschap, verandert ons perspectief van het eigen ik naar de groep.

De betekenis van cultuur

Hoe doen de Nederlandse media het als het gaat om inclusie en diversiteit? Wat is al goed, wat kan er beter? En waar zijn we precies naar op zoek als het gaat om deze discussie? Als schrijver en journalist is Babah Tarawally zelf een belangrijke stem in het Nederlandse medialandschap. De discussie over deze thema’s wordt er vaak al snel een van verwijten en beschuldigende vingers. Daarom is één van Tarawally’s speerpunten om steeds de nuance en het gesprek te blijven zoeken.

Na een korte lezing gaat Tarawally  in gesprek met Nina van Loosen, Hilda Ouraaha en Dejanique Petronilia, studenten van de Radboud Universiteit die de cursus Managing Diversity in Communication bij de Faculteit der Letteren volgen, over alles wat te maken heeft met diversiteit en media. Babah Tarawally is schrijver, journalist en columnist. Hij ontvluchtte het oorlogsgeweld in Sierra Leone en schrijft, spreekt en organiseert programma’s over de rol en betekenis van cultuurverschillen. Tijdens zijn zevenjarige asielprocedure publiceerde hij De god met de blauwe ogen (2010). Daarnaast verscheen van zijn hand De verloren hand (2016) en Gevangen in zwart-wit denken (2018). Bij zijn denken en schrijven over cultuur en diversiteit speelt de Afrikaanse Ubuntu filosofie een grote rol.
