The war in Ukraine holds the world in its grip. Russian missiles are hitting West-Ukraine, close to the EU-borders. Meanwhile, the European Union is imposing sanction after sanction against Russia and is even sending weapons to Ukraine. How can we understand the EU’s actions from a geopolitical perspective? Come and listen to political scientist Reinout van der Veer about the geopolitics of the war in Ukraine.

The EU and Ukraine

Ukraine has had the intention to join the EU for quite some time. The EU-Ukraine association agreement was a significant step towards that goal. Since the Russian invasion Ukraine’s desire to join the EU is stronger than ever. Where does this Ukrainian desire to join the EU come from? How does the Russian invasion change the likelihood of this goal being achieved? And how do Russia’s actions impact the power relations within the EU?

Sanctions

The sanctions Russia is facing are putting its economy under severe strain. The value of the ruble has fallen sharply, and many international companies are leaving the country. What effect are these sanctions having on the Russian people? And how will they impact the way the war is unfolding?

Global conflict

While many Western countries are backing Ukraine, the world is watching anxiously how China will respond to this crisis. How does this conflict impact the way the great political powers relate to each other? What will it do to the positions of alliances like NATO and the EU? And should we be wary of a second Cold War?

About the speaker

Reinout van der Veer is political scientist and assistant professor of European integration in the department of Political Science at Radboud University. He is an expert in the field of European decision making, conflict and politization within EU. In recent research he explored the efficacy and effects of earlier EU economic sanctions on Russia.

De oorlog in Oekraïne houdt de wereld in zijn greep. Russische raketten treffen West-Oekraïne, dicht bij de EU-grenzen. Ondertussen legt de Europese Unie sanctie na sanctie op tegen Rusland en stuurt ze zelfs wapens naar Oekraïne. Hoe kunnen we het optreden van de EU begrijpen vanuit een geopolitiek perspectief? Kom luisteren naar politicoloog Reinout van der Veer over de geopolitiek van de oorlog in Oekraïne.

De EU en Oekraïne

Oekraïne heeft al geruime tijd de intentie om toe te treden tot de EU. Het associatieverdrag tussen de EU en Oekraïne was een belangrijke stap in de richting van dat doel. Sinds de Russische invasie is de wens van Oekraïne om toe te treden tot de EU sterker dan ooit. Waar komt deze wens om lid te worden van de EU vandaan? Wat betekent de Russische invasie voor de kans dat dit doel wordt bereikt? En hoe beïnvloeden de acties van Rusland de machtsverhoudingen binnen de EU?

Sancties

De sancties waarmee Rusland wordt geconfronteerd zetten de economie zwaar onder druk. De waarde van de roebel is scherp gedaald en veel internationale bedrijven verlaten het land. Welk effect hebben deze sancties op het Russische volk? En welke invloed zullen ze hebben op de manier waarop de oorlog zich ontvouwt?

Globaal conflict

Terwijl veel Westerse landen Oekraïne steunen, kijkt de wereld met spanning toe hoe China op deze crisis zal reageren. Welke invloed heeft dit conflict op de manier waarop de grote politieke machten zich tot elkaar verhouden? Wat gaat het doen met de posities van allianties als de NAVO en de EU? En moeten we op onze hoede zijn voor een tweede Koude Oorlog?

Over de spreker

Reinout van der Veer is politicoloog en universitair docent Europese integratie bij de afdeling Politicologie van de Radboud Universiteit. Hij is expert op het gebied van Europese besluitvorming, conflict en politisering binnen de EU. Recent onderzocht hij de effecten van eerdere economische sancties van de EU tegen Rusland.
