The Power of Privilege | Conversation with anthropologist and journalist Joris Luyendijk (Gesprek)

How do these advantages come about? And to what extent are opportunities and power that flow from these privileges problematic? Come and learn from  anthropologist and journalist Joris Luyendijk about privilege, power and justice.

Invulnerability

As wealthy white cisgender Dutch male Joris Luyendijk belongs to a small group of people that face little discrimination and whose social economic odds are strongly stacked in their favour. As a result these near invulnerable men frequently end up in positions of political and economic power. In his latest book Luyendijk investigates how his own strong socio-economic and cultural position has given him a head start. He reflects upon how his privileges have shaped his self-perception as well as his views of society, and calls into question the desirability of ‘men-like-him’ running society.

Power and prejudice

The fact that a small group of men has a tremendous impact on our  society is not unproblematic, according to Luyendijk. They heavily influence our public policies regarding discrimination, social welfare and social justice, while they have never experienced such hurdles and vulnerabilities themselves. This creates a blind spot for structural problems such as racism, sexism and ablism. How can we address this? Do we need more diverse policy makers? And is awareness of these problems among the ‘men-that-check-all-the-boxes’ not crucial working towards a more just society?

Structural injustice

During the evening anthropologist and journalist Joris Luyendijk will provide a brief introduction to his book on power and privilege. After his lecture he engages in a conversation with gender and diversity expert Lema Salah. Together they will talk about discrimination, intersectionality and equality. How does he view his own position after the (critical) reception of his book? And what groups should take lead in the struggle to address structural injustices?

About the speakers

Joris Luyendijk is an anthropologist and journalist. He worked as correspondent in the Middle East for NRC and investigated the inner workings of financial world in The City in London. In February 2022 his latest book, De zeven vinkjes, has been published, in which he explores his own privileges.


Lema Salah is historian and gender and diversity expert. She works as PhD candidate at the Political Science Department of Radboud University and the Netherlands Defense Academy. In her research she focuses on inclusive leadership in organisational cultures.

Hetero, wit, man, rijk, hoog opgeleide ouders, een universitaire opleiding en van Nederlandse afkomst. Als je dit alles af kan vinken, heb je in Nederland al een grote voorsprong. Waar komt dat grote voordeel vandaan? En in hoeverre zijn macht en mogelijkheden die uit deze privileges voortvloeien een probleem? Kom luisteren naar antropoloog en journalist Joris Luyendijk over privileges, macht en rechtvaardigheid.

Onkwetsbaar

Als rijke, witte, cisgender, Nederlandse man, hoort Joris Luyendijk tot een select gezelschap dat maar weinig discriminatie ervaart en van wiens sociaal-economische positie erg in hun voordeel werkt. Het gevolg is dat deze ogenschijnlijk onkwetsbare mannen vaak in machtige politieke of economische posities terecht komen. In zijn nieuwst boek onderzoekt Luyendijk hoe zijn eigen bevoordeelde socio-economische en culturele positie hem een voorsprong heeft gegeven. Hij reflecteert op hoe zijn privileges zijn zelfperceptie en de manier waarop hij naar de maatschappij kijkt hebben gevormd, en hij vraagt zich af of het wenselijk is dat ‘mannen zoals hij’ het voor het zeggen hebben in de maatschappij.

Macht en vooroordelen

Het feit dat een kleine groep mannen een enorme impact op onze maatschappij heeft is niet onproblematisch volgens Joris Luyendijk. Zij hebben bijvoorbeeld een grote invloed op overheidsbeleid als het gaat om discriminatie, de inrichting van de verzorgingsstaat en sociale rechtvaardigheid, terwijl ze zelf nooit tegenslag of kwetsbaarheid ervaren hebben. Dit zorgt voor een blinde vlek voor structurele problemen als racisme en seksisme. Hoe kunnen we dit tij keren? Hebben we meer diverse politici en beleidsmakers nodig? En is bewustwording van deze problemen onder de ‘mannen die alle 7 vinkjes hebben’ niet cruciaal bij het werken aan een meer rechtvaardige samenleving?

Structurele onrechtvaardigheid

Na een korte introductie op zijn boek De 7 Vinkjes, gaat Joris Luyendijk in gesprek met gender- en diversiteitsexpert Lema Salah. Samen spreken ze over discriminatie, intersectionaliteit, en gelijkheid. Hoe beschouwt Luyendijk zijn eigen positie na de kritische ontvangst van zijn boek? En wie of welke groepen zouden de kar moeten trekken in de strijd tegen structurele onrechtvaardigheden?

Joris Luyendijk is antropoloog en journalist. Hij werkt o.a. als Midden-Oosten correspondent voor NRC en onderzocht de bancaire wereld in ‘The City’ in Londen. In februari 2022 verscheen zijn nieuwste boek, De zeven vinkjes, waarin hij zijn eigen privileges verkent.


Lema Salah is historicus en gender- en diversiteitsexpert. Ze doet promotieonderzoek bij de vakgroep Politicologie van de Radboud Universiteit en de Nederlandse Defensie Academie. In haar onderzoek richt te zich op inclusief leiderschap in organisatieculturen.
