Last night Russia invaded Ukraine. How could this happen? And how will this situation evolve? Come and listen to political scientist Bertjan Verbeek and historian Paul van Reef who will reflect on the recent developments.

Last night President Putin delivered an unexpected speech in which he questions Ukraine's right to exist. Almost immediately after that, bombing started in several cities in Ukraine. Many victims are feared.

Rising tensions

Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, tensions have escalated, not only between Ukraine and Russia but also between Russia and the West. In the past few months, Russia has been declaring in increasingly harsh terms that “threats from Ukraine” can no longer be tolerated.

Reactions

Europe and the United States have already strongly condemned the attack and are announcing heavy economic sanctions, but will always want to avoid military intervention. China’s voice, meanwhile, is strikingly absent. How will this conflict affect international relations?

What will this war mean for the people of Ukraine? What can we expect? And how does the conflict in Ukraine affect tensions between the West and Russia? Bertjan Verbeek and historina Paul van Reef discus these questions, historian Lema Salah is the moderator.

About the speakers

Bertjan Verbeek is a political scientist at Radboud University. He conducts research on crisis decision-making in foreign policy. He also conducts research into the learning capacity of governments during and after crises.

Paul van Reef is historian at Radboud University. As a PhC candidate, he is specialized in modern political European history, history of sports and international organisations.

Evert van de Zweerde is political philosopher at Radboud University. His research focusses on ideology, civil society and democracy. Next to that he is founder of the Democratic Laboratory.

Lema Salah is historian and gender and diversity expert. She works as PhD candidate at the Political Science Department of Radboud University and the Netherlands Defence Academy. In her research she explored the gender policies of the United Nations in Afghanistan.

Rusland is afgelopen nacht Oekraïne binnengevallen. Hoe kon dit gebeuren? En hoe gaat het nu verder? Kom luisteren naar politicoloog Gertjan Verbeek en  historicus Paul van Reef die duiding geven bij de recente ontwikkelingen.

Toespraak

Vannacht hield president Poetin een onverwachte toespraak waarin hij het bestaansrecht van  Oekraïne in twijfel trekt. Vrijwel direct daarna begonnen er bombardementen in verschillende steden in Oekraïne. Er wordt voor veel slachtoffers gevreesd.

Oplopende spanningen

Sinds de annexatie van de Krim in 2014 is er sprake van oplopende spanningen, niet alleen tussen Oekraïne en Rusland maar ook tussen Rusland en het Westen. De laatste paar maanden heeft Rusland in steeds hardere bewoordingen te verstaan gegeven dat “de bedreigingen vanuit de Oekraïne” niet langer getolereerd kunnen worden.

Reacties

Europa en Amerika hebben de aanval al scherp veroordeeld en kondigen zware economische sancties aan, maar zullen militair ingrijpen ten alle tijden willen voorkomen. China houdt zich opvallend afzijdig. Welke invloed gaat deze oorlog hebben voor de internationale verhoudingen?

Wat gaat deze oorlog betekenen voor de inwoners van de Oekraïne? Wat zijn de prognoses? En welke invloed heeft het conflict in de Oekraïne op de spanningen tussen het Westen en Rusland? Politicoloog Bertjan Verbeek en historicus Paul van Reef gaan met elkaar in gesprek onder leiding van gespreksleider Lema Salah.

Over de sprekers

Bertjan Verbeek is politicoloog aan de Radboud Universiteit. Hij doet onderzoek naar crisisbesluitvorming in buitenlands beleid. Daarnaast doet hij o.a. onderzoek naar het leervermogen van overheden tijdens en na crises.

Paul van Reef is historicus aan de Radboud Universiteit. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de moderne politieke geschiedenis van Europa, sportgeschiedenis en internationale organisaties.

Evert van de Zweerde is politiek filosoof aan de Radboud Universiteit. In zijn onderzoek staan de thema’s ideologie, civil society en democratie centraal. Daarnaast is hij de oprichter van het Democratisch Laboratorium.

Lema Salah is historicus en gender- en diversiteitsexpert. Ze werkt als promovendus bij de vakgroep Politicologie aan de Radboud Universiteit en de Nederlandse Defensie Academie.
