Who should govern us? In the current climate of resentment against authority and elites, who are best equipped to rule our country? Should our governments always consist of the best and the brightest? Or should we rather aim at regimes that are representing the citizens both on a social-economic and an educational level? Come and learn from one of the world’s renowned  philosophers Michael Sandel, who will shed his light on these and related questions.

A brew of anger and frustration

In his bestseller and Book of the Year 2020 The Tyranny of Merit, philosopher Michael Sandel argues that we live in an age of winners and losers, where the odds are stacked in favor of those who already have a head start. The consequence is a brew of anger and frustration that has fueled populist protest. To overcome the polarized politics of our time, Sandel states, we must rethink our attitude toward success and failure that has accompanied rising inequality. He offers an alternative way of thinking about success – more attentive to the role of luck in human affairs, more conductive to an ethics of humility, and more hospitable to a politics of the common good.

Backlash against experts and elites

Especially for this occasion, Michael Sandel will elaborate on meritocracy in relation to authority and government. Are those with academic credentials better equipped to govern us than differently educated citizens? And what accounts for the backlash against experts and elites? After his interactive lecture, Sandel will discuss these and related questions in more detail with Radboud scholars political scientist Carolien van Ham, political philosopher Vivienne Matthies-Boon and philosopher Christoph Lüthy. Philosopher and ethicist Marcel Becker will chair the evening.

About the speakers

Michael Sandel teaches political philosophy at Harvard University.  His books--on justice, democracy, bioethics, markets, and meritocracy--have been translated into more than 30 languages. He has been described as “the world’s most influential living philosopher.” (New Statesman). Sandel’s recent book, The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good?, seeks a way beyond the polarized politics of our time. It was named a best book of the year by The Guardian, New Statesman, The Times Literary Supplement, Bloomberg, Le Point (Paris), and New Weekly (Beijing).  Six of Sandel’s books have been published in Dutch (Uitgeverij Ten Have): Het onbehagen in de democratie: Denken in tijden van crisis; De tirannie van verdienste: Over de toekomst van de democratie; Niet alles is te koop: de morele grenzen van marktwerking; Rechtvaardigheid: wat is de juiste keuze?;  Politiek en moral: filosofie voor het publieke debat; and Pleidooi tegen volmaaktheid een ethiek voor gentechnologie. Sandel’s free online course “Justice” has been viewed by tens of millions of people. His BBC Radio 4 series “The Global Philosopher” explores the ethical issues lying behind the headlines with participants from around the world. Sandel has been a visiting professor at the Sorbonne, delivered the Tanner Lectures on Human Values at Oxford, received Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His lectures have packed such venues as St. Paul’s Cathedral (London), the Sydney Opera House (Australia), and an outdoor stadium in Seoul (S. Korea), where 14,000 people came to hear him speak. Carolien van Ham is professor of Empirical political science at Radboud University. She researches democratic legitimacy and political representation. She also publishes research on electoral fraud and the integrity of elections: How can countries ensure that their voters are able to trust their political system?

Vivienne Matthies-Boon is professor of Philosophical ethics and political philosophy at Radboud University. She has an interdisciplinary background in Critical Theory, Political Science and Sociology. Her primary interests are in the phenomenological experiences of injustice: how do trauma, health, wellbeing and existential vulnerability affect political structures and mobilization?

Christoph Lüthy is professor of History of philosophy at Radboud University. He has a training in philosophy and the history of science. He is principally interested in the origin of the modern sciences, in the evolution of matter theories, in visual strategies in the sciences, and in the mind-body problem as it developed in reaction to Darwin's evolutionary model.

Marcel Becker is an associate professor of Philosophical ethics an political philosophy at Radboud University. He is an expert on applied ethics, particularly on public administration ethics, political ethics, (digital) media ethics, and the judicial ethics. His aim is not so much to prescribe what is good and what is bad, but rather to elucidate the underlying moral tensions.

Academic ceremony on the occasion of awarding an honorary doctorate

An honorary doctorate is a doctorate awarded to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution in science, without having written a dissertation. Sometimes an honorary doctorate is also awarded for non-academic achievements, such as political or social achievements.

The awarding of an honorary doctorate is an academic ceremony. That means it follows a set protocol as is common at most universities.

The audience is seated in the hall. The beadle (the university's usher, recognisable by toga and staff) enters the hall with behind him the procession: professors in togas and with berets from Radboud University or elsewhere. The audience stands up when the procession enters. Among them is laureate Michael Sandel. The professors of the procession take their seat in the corona: a few reserved rows at the front of the hall.

The rector magnificus opens the session with prayer and gives the floor to promotor philosopher Tamar Sharon. She delivers a eulogy, a laudatio, on Michael Sandel. Afterwards, he receives a kappa (a short cloak) over his shoulders and the honorary doctor's bull. Michael Sandel then addresses a vote of thanks. The rector magnificus closes the session again with prayer and the beadle presides over the professors in the procession as they leave the hall.

Een bron van woede en frustratie

In zijn bestseller en Boek van het Jaar 2020 De tirannie van verdienste: over de toekomst van de democratie stelt filosoof Michael Sandel dat we in een tijd van winnaars en verliezers leven. Een tijd waarin de kansen veel groter zijn voor hen die sowieso al een voorspong hebben. De consequentie is een mengeling van woede en frustratie die een bron werd voor populistisch protest.

Om voorbij te kunnen gaan aan de polariserende politiek van onze tijd, moeten we onze mentaliteit ten aanzien van falen en succes grondig herzien, stelt Sandel, want juist dit denken heeft tot een groeiende ongelijkheid geleid.

Michael Sandel biedt een nieuwe manier van nadenken over succes. We moeten volgens hem meer aandacht hebben voor de rol van geluk in menselijke aangelegenheden, en we moeten een ethiek van bescheidenheid en het algemeen welzijn centraal stellen.

Weerstand tegen experts en elites

Speciaal voor zijn bezoek aan de Radboud Universiteit gaat Michael Sandel in op de relatie tussen meritocratie enerzijds, en autoriteit en overheid anderzijds. Zijn mensen met een academische achtergrond beter in staat om ons te besturen dan anderen? En wat leidde tot de enorme weerstand tegen experts en elites? Na zijn lezing gaat Michael Sandel verder op deze vragen in met Radboudwetenschappers politicoloog Carolien van Ham, politiek filosoof Vivienne Matthies-Boon en filosoof Christoph Lüthy. Filosoof en ethicus Marcel Becker is de gespreksleider.

Over de sprekers

Michael Sandel is een Amerikaanse politiek filosoof verbonden aan Harvard Law School, waar zijn vak Rechtvaardigheid de eerste cursus was die gratis online en op televisie te volgen was. Tientallen miljoenen mensen wereldwijd keken ernaar. Sandel verwierf ook grote bekendheid vanwege zijn boek Liberalism and the Limits of Justice (1982), waarin hij de bekende rechtvaardigheidstheorie van John Rawls bekritiseerde. Zijn meeste recente boek, de bestseller De tirannie van verdienste (2020) werd verkozen tot Boek van het Jaar door The Guardian, The Times en The New Statesman.

Carolien van Ham is hoogleraar Empirische politicologie aan de Radboud Universiteit. Ze onderzoekt democratische legitimiteit en politieke vertegenwoordiging. Ook publiceert ze over verkiezingsfraude en de integriteit van verkiezingen: hoe zorgen landen ervoor dat kiezers vertrouwen (kunnen) hebben in hun politieke systeem?

Vivienne Matthies-Boon is hoogleraar Wijsgerige ethiek en politieke filosofie aan de Radboud Universiteit. Haar primaire interesse gaat uit naar de fenomenologische ervaringen van onrecht: hoe hebben trauma, gezondheid, welzijn en existentiële kwetsbaarheid invloed op politieke structuren en mobilisatie?

Christoph Lüthy is hoogleraar Geschiedenis van filosofie en wetenschap aan de Radboud Universiteit. Hij is geïnteresseerd in het ontstaan van de moderne wetenschappen sinds de Renaissance, in de ontwikkeling van materietheorieën, de verbeelding van wetenschappelijke kennis, en het mind-body probleem in het kader van Darwins evolutietheorie.

Marcel Becker is universitair docent Wijsgerige ethiek aan de Radboud Universiteit. Hij is deskundig op het gebied van toegepaste ethiek, met name wat betreft het openbaar bestuur, digitale media en juridische (beroeps)ethiek. Het gaat hem daarbij vooral om het verhelderen van de achterliggende morele spanningsvelden.

Academische zitting bij gelegenheid van het uitreiking van een eredoctoraat

Een eredoctoraat is een doctoraat dat wordt verleend aan personen die een uitzonderlijke bijdrage in de wetenschap hebben geleverd, zonder dat zij een proefschrift hebben geschreven. Soms wordt een eredoctoraat ook toegekend voor niet-academische prestaties, zoals bijvoorbeeld politieke of sociale prestaties.

De uitreiking van een eredoctoraat is een academische ceremonie. Dat betekent dat er volgens een vast protocol zoals dat op de meeste universiteiten gebruikelijk is, wordt gehandeld.

Het publiek zit in de zaal. De pedel (de bode van de universiteit, te herkennen aan toga met staf) komt de zaal binnen met achter hem het cortège: hoogleraren in toga en met baret van de Radboud Universiteit of elders. Het publiek gaat staan bij binnenkomst van het cortège. Onder hen is ook de laureaat Michael Sandel. Het cortège neemt plaats in de corona: enkele gereserveerde rijen vooraan in de zaal.

De rector magnificus opent de zitting met gebed en geeft het woord aan promotor filosoof Tamar Sharon. Zij spreekt een lofrede, een laudatio, over Michael Sandel uit. Na afloop ontvangt hij een kappa (een korte mantel) over zijn schouders en de eredoctorsbul. Daarna spreekt Michael Sandel een dankwoord uit. De rector magnificus sluit de zitting weer met gebed en de pedel gaat het cortège voor bij het verlaten van de zaal.
