Wat kunnen we leren van de coronacrisis? Volgens filosoof Marc De Kesel laat de wereldwijde crisis zien dat niet de economie, maar het behoud van leven aan de basis moet staan van onze politiek. Het bijgeloof van het neoliberalisme dat de markt alles oplost moet kritisch bekeken worden. Belang van vrijheid
Naast de basis van de politiek, namelijk het behoud van leven, legt de coronacrisis ook het belang van vrijheid bloot. De coronacrisis is een wereldwijd probleem dat we samen moeten oplossen. Maar wel ieder vanuit zijn eigen vrijheid. Dit samengaan van vrijheid en samenwerken, dus ook iets inleveren van je vrijheid, vormt de basis van de democratie.
Dat vrijheid niet vanzelfsprekend is, is ook in deze coronacrisis overduidelijk. Politieke leiders kunnen crises gebruiken om hun macht te vergroten. Daarom moet ons democratisch bewustzijn hoog gehouden worden. Over de spreker
Marc De Kesel is filosoof aan de Radboud Universiteit. Hij doet onderzoek naar de theorie van religie en mystiek, en schreef diverse boeken over deze onderwerpen. Daarnaast is hij directeur van het Titus Brandsma Instituut.

What can we learn from the corona crisis? According to philosopher Marc De Kesel this pandemic shows us that not economics, but the preservation of life should be the? foundation of our political system. The neoliberal myth that the market will fix everything should be questioned critically. Watch this interview with Marc De Kesel by program manager Liesbeth Jansen on how the coronavirus exposes the basis of our freedom and our democracy.
Importance of Freedom
In addition to showing us the basis of politics, namely the preservation of life, the coronavirus also reveals the importance of freedom. The coronavirus is a global problem that/ which we have to fight together. Yet everyone must participate precisely because of one’s own freedom. This union of freedom and working together, which may also mean giving up some of your freedom, forms the foundation of our democracy.
The fact that we should not take our freedom for granted is proven by this coronapandemic once again. Some political leaders take this crisis as an opportunity to extend their power. That is why we should uphold our democratic consciousness. About the Speaker
Marc De Kesel is philosopher at Radboud University. He studies theories of religion and mysticism, and has published multiple books on these topics. He is also the director of the Titus Brandsma Institute.
