Jesus Fatigue | Lecture by theologian Mariecke van den Berg

22.30 - 22.33 h. Valkhofzaal

Can boredom be a form of activism? Theologian Mariecke van den Berg explores the question whether boredom can be employed as a form of protest for minorities. What if religious tradition makes you feel ignored or excluded? Do you have other options than to simply accept your fate or leave? According to theologian Mariecke van den Berg, openly displaying a sense of disconnect could have a subversive potential.

A rehabilitation of boredom

When injustice is being discussed in a Christian context, Jesus is often automatically portrayed as “the one who was there for the marginalized”. This is problematic, states Mariecke van den Berg, because this perspective has a tendency to end in “Jesus has already solved everything”. This frees people from the obligation to investigate the underlying causes of this injustice. In particular, this can be hurtful for minorities and lead to disengagement. But what if this disengagement can be turned into a subversive strategy? Is it high time for a rehabilitation of boredom?

Program manager Nort Vlemmix is the moderator.

About the speaker

Mariecke van den BergMariecke van den Berg is extraordinary professor of Feminism and Christianity (Catharina Halkes Chair). Her research focuses on the role gender and sexuality play in the way the topic of religion is discussed in societies like The Netherlands. She approaches this from a feminist and queer perspective: how are femininity and masculinity, heterosexuality and homosexuality, being trans or cis contextualized within Christian traditions?
