RSS02.B2 Ethnographic Methods: From Fieldwork to Textwork

What happens after fieldwork? How do we get from data generated using ethnographic methods to written accounts that are not only academically robust, but also meaningful? In this course, we will explore the deskwork and textwork phases of using ethnographic/interpretivist methods, considering the issues and challenges involved in taking research projects from the field to the page.

The course will combine theory with practise, reading with writing, and presentations with discussion (in class and in small groups outside of class), in order that that participants have the opportunity to apply the concepts, principles and strategies discussed to their own projects and reflect on what works–and what doesn’t–for them specifically as well more generally. Participants are expected to actively engage with all activities and be willing to discuss their own projects (to the extent possible whilst upholding ethical commitments), as well as sharing their reflections and feedback on others’ work.
