Prof. Dr. Niels van Royen
Niels van Royen (Amsterdam, 1971) studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam and received his doctorate degree in 1998. In 2003 he obtained – with honors – his PhD, in cooperation with the Max-Planck Institute in Bad Nauheim and the University of Freiburg. Van Royen specialized in Cardiology at the University of Amsterdam, AMC (2003 – 2008).
In 2010 he started as a professor of Interventional Cardiology at the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam. He has dedicated much of his time to set up translational research lines focusing on repair mechanisms in ischemic heart diseases, collateral artery growth and no reflow, and has initiated several multi-center clinical trials, such as COACT and REDUCE-MVI. In 2017 he was appointed as Chief of Cardiology at the Radboud University in Nijmegen.
He serves as a promotor of 16 PhD candidates. Recently he finished several multi-center clinical trials, such as the iMODERN, PECTUS and ARTICA study. His most recent initiatives include projects on Artificial Intelligence in Cardiology and the development of a wearable device to detect cardiac arrest at home.
