RSS04.09 Migrant Inclusion Policies and practices

With increasing migration to Western Europe, inclusion and integration have become buzz words in politics, media and private and public organizations. When following the public debate and the wealth of academic publications on the topic, it may seem that inclusion is everywhere.

Nevertheless, migrants in Europe continue to experience worse health, lower levels of employment and more discrimination than native populations. Although national and local governments continue to device inclusion policies, these do not always have their intended effects. Migrant inclusion incorporates several overlapping dimensions, from the legal and economic to social life and access to services. In this summer school, you will therefore be introduced to the topic of migrant inclusion by members from the Radboud University Network on Migrant Inclusion (RUNOMI) who will provide lectures on different topics relating to three domains of inclusion:
(1) economic inclusion;
(2) social/political inclusion; and
(3) access to public services, healthcare and housing.

“What are migrants’ positions on the labour market? How is their (mental) health? Do they have sufficient access to housing? How do migrants experience inclusion?” are questions that the researchers of RUNOMI take as a starting point to tackle issues regarding migrant inclusion, respectively migrant inclusion policies and practices. Looking at the Dutch context and beyond, the lecturers will share their expertise on issues such as migrant entrepreneurship, anti-discrimination law and citizenship testing, access to primary care and segregation on the housing market and the analysis of migrant experience in cultural expression. The multidisciplinary nature of this course will challenge the participants in their assignment: they are asked to identify a migrant inclusion issue and develop an interdisciplinary policy/practice that builds on the multidisciplinary academic discussion of the course. On the last day there will be a field trip in Nijmegen, with the aim to learn more about a local migrant inclusion project.
