Checklist Research Data Management

Use this checklist as a guide towards proper research data management before, during and after your research project. Not all topics will be relevant for your research, simply use this checklist as a starting point.

Planning before research                                       plan

  • Write a data management plan. Before you do this, check whether your funder has a specific format.
  • Be aware that the type of data you are using (critical, sensitive or standard), has implications for the way you use, store and share your data.

Ethical issues                                                                ethics

Storing and sharing during research                           store-share

  • Check where you can store your data during your research.
  • Document and organise your data during research in order to make it understandable.
  • Decide whether you can or should share your data during research.
  • Make clear arrangements in case you need to share your data during research. Decide on the rights of the collaborators towards the data (read only, read and write) and how this is organised. Do not forget to keep track of all the changes that are made.

Archiving data after research                                  archive (1)

  • Make sure you store your dataset for at least ten years after research, for the sake of scientific integrity.
  • Check whether you can make your data available for reuse after research.
  • If you want to make your data available for reuse, check in which archive you want to store the data.
  • Radboud University has its own archive, the Radboud Data Repository (RDR). Not all Radboud University research institutes have joined the RDR yet. You can check whether you can use the RDR to archive and/or publish your research data here.
  • For researchers affiliated with the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, the Donders Repository is available.
  • Check which conditions your dataset has to meet before being stored in the archive of your choice.
  • Decide under which conditions you want to make your dataset available for others.
