Tasks and responsibilities of data stewards at Radboud University

Each research institute of Radboud University has one or more data stewards. The overview below summarizes their activities, distinguishing between core tasks and responsibilities and optional activities. The former are applicable to all data stewards of Radboud University, the latter may be performed by some of the data stewards.

Core tasks and responsibilities of data stewards at Radboud University:

  • Advise researchers on the management and storage of research data during the research and for the longer term, including the potential publication of data.
  • Actively contribute to the implementation and further improvement of RDM within the research institute.
  • Actively contribute to the implementation of the research institute's RDM policy and, if necessary, make proposals to update the policy.
  • Support the compliance to the RDM policy and have a general overview of this compliance.
  • Be knowledgeable of ethical and legal issues regarding research data, and refer researchers to relevant counselors and committees with respect to such issues.
  • Advise the board of the research institute about the implementation of and compliance to the RDM policy of the institute.
  • Stay informed about new developments and participate in RDM-related activities and initiatives within Radboud University.

Optional activities of data stewards at Radboud University:

  • Provide feedback on data management plans and data management paragraphs.
  • Advise on data collection, including the reuse of existing data.
  • Develop RDM work processes.
  • Organize RDM training or courses.
  • Develop and update products for RDM support, such as websites, manuals, course materials, demos and e-learning modules.
  • Monitor whether data management plans are written.
  • Monitor the compliance to the FAIR principles.
  • Monitor the long-term archiving of data.
  • Monitor whether data are managed by active staff members; ensure a proper handover when employees leave.
  • Identify possible privacy and security risks, partly in the context of the GDPR.
  • Provide advice on RDM to the Faculty Board.
  • Facilitate project registration.
