We currently observe initiatives to align public and private forms of food safety governance. Based on a global survey of governmental food authorities (summer 2017), I distinguish different forms of cooperation and collaboration with private food safety assurance systems. What are the arguments of respondents in favour and arguments against collaboration with private governance systems? Finally, the consequences will be discussed of incorporating private controls in governmental monitoring and enforcement policy. Arguable, the role of public authorities will shift from direct inspections towards system controls and meta regulation. This will also have an impact on the accountability and legitimacy of governmental food authorities.
