Search in the Porthis database
You can make a query either with free text or specifically in one of the fields. By moving the mouse over the photographs an amount of data will be presented.
Artists ' names are spelt according to the Allgemeine Künstler Lexikon. Additions such as ' school ' and ' follower ' are in English. The name of a person is given according to the World Biographical Information System. The names of Roman emperors and empresses are according to the Wikipedia list of Roman emperors. Names of married women are written in the Dutch way, namely first the surname of the husband and then the maiden name. Kings and emperors are here given the Dutch name, e.g. ' Frederik II van Pruisen''. If a name can be spelt in various ways or someone is also known under a different name then that is included in the field ‘alternative name '. In this field kings and emperors are given the name in the language of the land of origin plus the family name, e.g. Friedrich II von Hohenzollern.' The field Nationality is in English. Place names are according to Get Lat Lon.
