Byzantine Studies Netherlands

Byzantine Studies Netherlands is a society that welcomes anyone who is occupied with the study of Byzantium within the Netherlands. The society wishes to offer a platform to its members and promote their interests nationally and internationally. The society is the Dutch committee of the Association Internationale des Etudes Byzantines (AIEB). This website contains information on activities in the field of Byzantine studies both in the Netherlands and abroad.

24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies postponed and relocated

The 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies has been postponed to August 2022 and has been relocated from Istanbul to Padua and Venice. The program will be fundamentally unchanged from that organized for the congress of 2021 in Istanbul.  Three members of Byzantine Studies Netherlands will convene a Round Table Session at the congress:

  • Byzantine Studia Humanitatis. Bridging Disciplines in Eleventh- and Twelfth-Century Byzantium. Convenor: Daphne Penna.
  • The Urban Landscape and Its Dynamics: Constantinople, Rome and Baghdad (800-1000) Convenor: Mariëtte Verhoeven.
  • Connections between Byzantium (or the Eastern Mediterranean), the East and the West in the 6th and 7th centuries CE (NL). Convenor: Joanita Vroom.
