Our esteemed colleague and professor emeritus Ton Weiler passed away on 28 April. He was 93 years old.

A digital platform has now been built which reveals long-distance trade routes in Northern Europe between ca. 1350 and 1650. The Research Center for Hanse and Baltic History, and the Universities of Göttingen, Magdeburg, Aarhus and Nijmegen worked together in the Viabundus project to make this possible.

The Society of Dutch Literature (Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde ) has awarded the Elise Mathilde Essay Prize 2021 to historian Adriaan Duiveman for his essay ‘Vloeibare Grenzen' (Liquid borders). The prize consists of a certificate and a cash prize of 10,000 euros.

Seven professors from Radboud University and Radboud university medical center are receiving royal distinctions for their exceptional academic and/or social achievements. Angélique Janssens, Professor of Historical Demography, receives the distinction of Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau (Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau).

On May 27 American historian Barbara Rosenwein will give an online Zoom lecture titled Anger: The Virtuous Vice. Rosenwein - professor emerita at Loyola University Chicago - specializes in the medieval history and the history of emotions.

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the spring of 2020, poems suddenly popped up in many places in the Netherlands and Belgium. Expert in Dutch Language and Culture Jeroen Dera (Radboud University) wanted to know how poetry readers felt about corona poems and published an article on the topic in late March.

Starting in the 1950s, the Nutrition Education Bureau (Voorlichtingsbureau voor de Voeding) attempted to swim against the tide of post-war abundance and offer guidance to ensure healthy, moderate food consumption. Unfortunately, the agency itself was forced to conclude in the 1970s that its influence was unclear, and that citizens had only grown fatter. This story is explored in a publication by historian Jon Verriet of Radboud University set to be published in Bijdragen en Mededelingen betreffende de Geschiedenis der Nederlanden (BMGN) on 24 March.
