Historical yearbook Gelre 2020: on viruses, manslaughter, art and charity

Date of news: 8 February 2021

The recently published 111th Voorkant Gelreyearbook of the historical Vereniging Gelre (‘Association Gelre’, also known as Bijdragen en Mededelingen Gelre) once again contains a lot of worthwhile information about the history of Gelderland. It includes eight articles dealing with a variety of themes. Very topical, and very recognisable, is a description of the fight against infectious diseases by the nineteenth-century Gelderland health committee. The yearbook also contains various contributions about the Middle Ages, including a reflection on the Maelwael-Van Lymborch family of artists, and a reconstruction of the murder of a servant from Maas en Waal. A completely different example is an article about a charity in Zutphen that helped poor women obtain sewing and knitting jobs. The yearbook is illustrated with beautiful colour images and contains a considerate amount of reviews to conclude.

More information can be found on the website of the Vereniging Gelre, where you can also order the yearbook. The price is € 29.50 (including shipping costs). Members of the Vereniging Gelre will receive the yearbook for free.
