On 29 March, the Dutch minister of Education, Culture and Science, Robbert Dijkgraaf, sent a parliamentary letter stressing the importance of open science in scientific research. In his letter, he named research project Slave Registers by Coen van Galen (Radboud Institute for Culture and History) as a shining example of open science.

On Thursday 16 March the Historical Database Suriname Curacao (HDSC) research group invited researchers and archivists to the "Lives in Slavery" symposium in Nijmegen to discuss the opportunities and challenges of the recently published Suriname and Curacao slave register databases.

Much of the lives of urban dwellers in early modern Europe were played out in city streets and squares. In the edited volume, Early modern streets: A European perspective (2023), the diverse strands of scholarship on urban streets between circa 1450 and 1800 are brought together, tackling key questions on how early modern urban society was shaped and how this changed over time.

In a new article by Björn Quanjer, Ingrid van Dijk, and Matthias Rosenbaum-Feldbrügge in Demography, the authors compare both health indicators for those who experience parental mortality in the Netherlands between 1850 and 1940.

Call for Papers - Lives in slavery: Exploring the slave registers of Suriname and Curacao, 1830-1863
We are happy to announce that our research group Historical Database of Suriname and Curacao (HDSC) is soon going to publish the first releases of the Surinamese and the Curacao slave registers, in which the individual enslaved persons are linked between different series and owners. To celebrate this milestone, we organise a one-day research symposium to explore the research possibilities of these newly released datasets.
