Project description

Considered by many a representative of the cream of French literature, Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907) described himself as a 'Parisian Dutchman'. With his head in France, his heart in the Netherlands and his pen torn between these two allegiances, Huysmans's exceptional oeuvre refers to - and reflects on - Dutch culture, national character, painting and religion. Smeets’s book charts Huysmans's Dutch identity and affinity through biography ('Huysmans en Nederland'), the critical reception of him in literary journalism ('Huysmans in Nederland') and through themes ('Nederland in Huysmans'), offering a rich and surprising portrait of this key figure of the French fin-de-siècle.
