Webinar: Zorg voor ouderen migranten in Nijmegen (Dutch only)

RUNOMI-lid Hanna Murray-Carlsson organised a webinar about culturally sensitive elderly care in collaboration with Sterker Sociaal Werk and Pharos. The aim was to connect local professionals who have experience in working with older migrants with each other. After a panel discussion with Conny van der Aalsvoort, Carolien Smits, Hanna Carlsson and Hatice Bölek about older migrants and care, we split up in small groups discussing four different themes:

1. Working with family caregivers
2. Outreaching and networking
3. Cooperation between family caregivers and care professionals in case of dementia
4. Strengthening professional networks in the city and neighbourhood
5. How to have a conversation about the approaching end of one’s life

The main points that came forward were:

  • There is often a backlog on information within families, because information is difficult to find and the health care circuit is unknown
  • Be aware of circumstances of overburdened family caregivers
  • Every care is culturally specific: be aware of cases that are the norm to us, but might be different or unfamiliar in other cultures. This is also the case in how illness might come about or be recognized with migrants
  • For questions concerning elderly migrants and family caregivers you can email c.vanderaalsvoort@sterker.nl
