Integration and inclusion in times of Corona
Among other groups, newly arriving people face problems to integrate in their new environment, an issue that has been augmented due to Corona restrictions impeding personal contacts. However, we also can take the present situation as a chance to get a better insight into the constraints for integration. Dealing with these constraints and finding ways facilitating inclusion will be equally important in the time after Corona.

14:55 Short summary of the day: what have we learned?
Working in the pandemic has its challenges for all of us. Home-offices that are actually our dining tables. Children running around because schools and daycares were closed. Quarantine and isolation because someone in your household had a fever or tested positive for covid. It affected all of us. The effects in academia have also been profound. Teaching became online and costed more energy, we keep getting and answering e-mails and especially those in the start-career phase worry about the effects covid has on their career and contract. This shows a potential impact of corona on inclusion in academia, according to the literature, corona impacts young scholars and parents more than established scholars and those without (young) children in the household. In this presentation I want to show the results from the employee-survey the Radboud WORKLIFE consortium did in July 2020 and talk to you about the things that have changed and not changed since then, especially concerning work stress, career planning and work-life balance.
Working towards inclusion at the Donders Institute

In my talk I will present some of the work of the Donders committee for diversity and sustainable science. The committee has two main objectives. First, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of diversity in academic science, promote diversity in all its forms and highlight best practices for ensuring the Donders is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. Second, we aim to promote sustainable research practices and culture, where collaboration and work-life balance are a core part of academic life.
To achieve these objectives we have carried out a number of activities. In my talk I will give examples of some of the initiatives the committee has taken on and pay particular attention to the results of a survey conducted last summer where we asked Donderians to tell us about their experience of diversity and inclusion at the Donders. I will discuss the preliminary results, showing Donderians belonging to minority groups often experience issues around inclusion differently than their majority counterparts, and highlight areas which we think improvements are needed.

Coming to the Netherlands and the Donders Institute from a country outside the EU that is non-western is often challenging from both a practical and cultural perspective. Couple that with being a member of the LGBTQ+ community and it creates for a unique set of circumstances and challenges to tackle. In my talk, I will be giving an overview of my experiences moving to the Netherlands and working at the Donders Institute as a member of both these groups, while also touching on some experiences shared through the Donders Diversity Committee survey.

Marina Bool & Alkinoos Hadjichristou (Biology Students)
Alkinoos Hadjichristou and Marina Bool are both Biology Students at the Faculty of Science. Alkinoos has just started his Bachelor Biology this academic year and moved from Cyprus to Nijmegen. Marina has almost finished her Master and moved some years ago for her Bachelor Biology from Utrecht (NL) to Nijmegen. They will tell you about their (personal) experiences of moving to a new city or even a new country and their integration into the Faculty of Science. How did the integration go for both of them, where can we see similarities and differences? Also, the difficulties posed by the Covid pandemic will be discussed.
