Environmental impact of fishponds (with fieldwork in Brazil)

Now that wild fish catches are stabilizing or declining while the demand for fish increases, aquaculture fish production is increasing world-wide and with it the area of fish ponds. With this ongoing expansion and intensification, aquaculture greenhouse gas emissions is likely dramatically boosted, but we do not know to which extent as accurate measurements are largely lacking. Similarly, relatively little is known about the downstream eutrophication impacts of fish ponds. We have different internship possibilities (master, bachelor and review) in this research field. Focus areas are: ecology and biogeochemistry including greenhouse gas emissions. Fieldwork in different parts of Brazil is possible in cooperation the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT) and Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF).
