Tuesday april 6th, students and staff of Dutch universities are campaigning for structurally more money for scientific education and research. Mandy Velthuis was involved in the action in Nijmegen, where a cortege of professors, student representatives, postdocs and pedel walked with a puppet of the philosopher Erasmus from the Aula to the Waal. To make a statement, Erasmus was literally put up to his lips in the river.

Researchers from NIOZ, the Radboud University and the University of Groningen have demonstrated how biodegradable meshes can support coastal ecosystems. Mussels, sea grasses and salt marshes have a better chance of survival if they are protected by the specially developed mats.
