Inhoud

Fine art and religion are at odds with each other in the sense that often either the religion or the art is secondary. Controversies arise when art transgresses religious sensibilities. In this minor we will find religion and art intertwined in popular culture, lived religion and non-Western religious art, and investigate the relationship between art and religion from various perspectives.

Students of Islam Studies can freely choose three courses from the five courses offered within this minor.

One of the first three courses in this minor specifically deals with Islam and Popular Culture (semester 1).

Students who have followed all courses Arabic (1, 2 and 3), including the language minor, may choose two other courses that deal with art and culture and focus particularly on Arabic language acquisition by studying texts in Arabic. One of them deals with poetry and one with modern standard Arabic texts from the media (both are offered in the second semester and taught in Dutch).
