Toelating

Studenten afkomstig uit Duitsland die in het bezit zijn van een Abitur kunnen ook toegelaten worden tot de bacheloropleiding Science. Uitgebreide informatie is te vinden op de website voor Duitse scholieren van de universiteit.

Studenten met andere vooropleidingen en vakkenpakketten kunnen altijd contact opnemen met de studieadviseur.

Doelstelling en eindtermen

Doel van de opleiding Science is studenten een brede bacheloropleiding van hoog niveau te bieden met nadruk op multidisciplinariteit binnen de betawetenschappen. Door de mogelijkheid een minor buiten de bèta te kiezen, wordt maatschappelijke toepassing gestimuleerd. Studenten worden zo opgeleid tot academici die in staat zijn tot interdisciplinair (fundamenteel en/of toegepast) natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek met betrekking tot vraagstukken die een geïntegreerde, c.q. gecombineerde fysisch-chemische, biologisch-fysische of chemisch-biologische aanpak vereisen. Hierbij kan gedacht worden aan vraagstukken en thema’s als 'Duurzame Energie' (bijv. zonnecellen), 'Milieu en Gezondheid' (bijvoorbeeld luchtvervuiling), 'Brain Imaging', etc., maar ook aan fundamenteel onderzoek op de grensvlakken van Biologie, Natuurkunde en Scheikunde, zoals bijvoorbeeld vloeibare kristallen, Atomic Force Microscopie of celmetabolisme.
Als toekomstige eerste werkomgeving voor studenten die een Onderzoeks-richting kiezen moet vooral worden gedacht aan laboratoria voor (toegepast) natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek (TNO, Philips, Shell), universitaire laboratoria (promotieonderzoek), etc.
Voor studenten die een maatschappelijk toegepaste richting kiezen, mikt de opleiding op functies bij instellingen die op basis van algemene natuurwetenschappelijke know-how nieuw beleid moeten ontwikkelen, adviezen moeten geven, projecten moeten uitvoeren, voorlichtingstaken moeten vervullen, in de wetenschapsjournalistiek, etc.
De educatieve minor in het derde jaar kan leiden tot een tweedegraads lesbevoegdheid in scheikunde of natuurkunde. In de aansluitende masteropleiding is ook een eerstegraads bevoegdheid in een van deze disciplines, of in beide (met een half jaar extra) te halen.

De Bachelor Science beoogt de volgende eindtermen te bewerkstelligen:

Bachelor Science
Knowledge and understanding
  • A general understanding of core concepts of chemistry, physics, (molecular) biology, mathematics, and computing science (PC, BP, BC)
  • The principles and procedures used in chemical analysis and the characterisation of chemical compounds (PC, BP, BC)
  • The principal techniques of structural investigations, including spectroscopy (PC, BP, BC)
  • Insight into biological, chemical, physical, mathematic, and computing science working and thinking methods, needed to understand multidisciplinary scientific problems, also in their societal context (PC, BP, BC)
  • A basic (BC) or more in depth (PC, BP)understanding of the concepts of mathematics including linear algebra, differential equations, complex functions, and statistics
  • A basic (BC) or more in depth (PC, BP) understanding of core concepts of computer science including algorithms, programing, and of computer, security, and information systems
  • A general understanding of several concepts of physics (PC, BP) including: the classical physics of rotation and periodic motion and the quantum-mechanical description in terms of angular momentum operators. Special relativity, and the Lorentz transformation for space-time and momentum-energy
  • The physical principles behind biological functions including neurons and neural networks and the auditory and visual systems (BP)
  • The basic structure of crystals and their symmetry, analyze crystal bonding, lattice vibrations and the electronic structure (PC, BP, BC)
  • The structure and reactivity of important classes of biomolecules and the chemistry of important biological processes (PC, BP, BC); the building of living cells, the biological function of cellular structures, components and biomolecules and the interactions between biomolecules; principal techniques of biochemical and molecular genetic investigations (BC)
Applying  knowledge and understanding
  • The capacity to apply knowledge in practice, in particular problem-solving competences, relating to both qualitative and quantitative information for the knowledge topics described above.
  • Numeracy and calculation skills, including such aspects as error analysis, order-of-magnitude estimations, and correct use of units
  • The capacity to analyse scientific problems within the chosen combination of disciplines using abstraction and scientific theories and models
  • Ability to critically follow societal discussions about issues within the multidisciplinary scientific field
  • Skills in planning and time management
Making judgements
  • Understand scientific questions using basic knowledge from the relevant scientific field
  • Ability to analyse material and synthesise concepts
  • Ability to include aspects of safety and environment, ethical, societal and economic consequences of (bio)chemical, and technological changes in the design of products
  • The capacity to adapt to new situations and to make decisions
Communication
  • The capacity to make a written and oral report in which results are analysed and discussed critically and objectively with respect to their reliability and relevance
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including in English, using modern presentation tools as appropriate
  • The capacity to interact with other people and to engage in (multidisciplinary) team-working
Lifelong learning skills
  • Ability to independently locate, consult and apply sources within the relevant field to analyse scientific problems in at least the chosen two disciplines and their interface
  • Make an informed selection for a Master study, another form of further education, or a function within society
  • Reflect upon personal knowledge, skills, attitudes and functioning, both individually and in discussions with others.
