Joint Sustainability policy 2021-2025

Radboud University and Radboudumc both feel an urgent need to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Their location on the same campus means that joining forces in the area of sustainability is logical. The Joint Sustainability policy 2021-2025 (pdf, 4,4 MB) offers a framework with aims for sustainable development within Radboud University and Radboudumc.

Four guiding aims are at the focus for 2021-2025:

  1. Create a Healthy environment
  2. Combat Climate Change
  3. Scale up Circularity
  4. Provide Equal opportunities for all

Joint sustainability goals

Both organisations are working in collaboration to realise these ambitions for sustainability, except where working together is thought undesirable. A number of joint objectives to this end have been formulated in the policy. These goals extend across various aspects of management, as well as teaching, research and patient care. In addition, Radboudumc and Radboud University will formulate their own organisation-specific objectives in a programme of implementation.

Sustainability Programme of Implementation

The Radboud University Sustainability Programme of Implementation forms part of the “Joint Sustainability Policy 2021-2025” that was established with Radboud university medical center (Radboudumc). The goal of this programme is to facilitate and support sustainable development in all units. The objectives and activities from the programme will help to determine the direction.

The basic principles behind our sustainability project are that we do not view sustainability as a project but as a continuous process; that sustainability will not be possible without partnership with stakeholders; that we focus on “material” topics; and that sustainability will be translated within the relevant sphere of influence in the organisation. Together with internal and external stakeholders, we determined what we want to and must work on over the coming years in the areas of sustainable education, sustainable research, sustainable operational management, and a sustainability movement.

Programme of Implementation Objectives

SMART goals have been created and will be monitored for the different core activities and operational processes at Radboud University. The responsibility for those goals is “in the line” as much as possible, and the progress is part of the regular management cycle and reporting. For example, in education we must set the goal for each Bachelor’s student must encounter sustainability challenges. For research, this includes the goal to stimulate more interdisciplinary research into sustainability challenges. One of the goals that we have formulated for our operational management is that we aim to be energy neutral in 2050. In order to create a sustainability movement, we set goals like encouraging sustainable behaviour in students and staff.
