Social Sufism in Sudan (Day Conference)
Social Sufism: Mysticism as a Guide for Democracy in Sudan?
Sudan has been in the news in recent years mainly due to political violence and inhuman suffering. But there is an important aspect of Sudanese society that is often overlooked: the role of mysticism and Sufism. It seems that Sudanese civil society has remained intact for all these years due to the constructive contribution of mysticism. This is also an important issue for our secularized society.
On Saturday September 21, the Sudanese Sufi master Kamal Eltilib is coming to the Titus Brandsma Memorial in Nijmegen. Around his lecture we will organize an event that explores the role of mysticism in Sudanese society. Current events in this country shed light on the role of mysticism in a politically tense society.
In addition to Kamal Eltilib, Prof. Francisco Zannini from the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome and Fawaz Salim from Utrecht will also provide a contribution.
