Geert Grote Edition (Opera Omnia)

The editorial project Gerardi Magni Opera Omnia falls within the Titus Brandsma Institute’s research project: Devotio Moderna (Modern Devotion). The purpose of this project is the development of a critical edition, together with introductory remarks, of the entire oeuvre of Geert Grote. Geert Grote is the founder of the 14th century reform movement within the Church, which is known by the name of the Modern Devotion.

At an earlier period, people recognised the importance of editions of those works written, in the main, by Geert Grote. A part of these editions was published in the first half of the 19th century, but the remaining part has, to-date, not yet appeared in print. In the 1930s the then Nijmegen Professor Titus Brandsma (1881- Dachau 1942) made a first attempt, for the benefit of Catholic thinking, to publish the Opera Omnia of this very important Dutch man out of the Middle Ages. For different reasons this endeavour failed but since 1989, because of the Titus Brandsma Institute, it has been infused with new life. The editorial project Gerardi Magni Opera Omnia is steered by an editorial board made up of people who have earned a reputation in the field of ecdotic analysis.
