In practice, statistical models contain many arbitrary choices that may (a) have a detrimental effect on what we can learn from it and (b) greatly reduces the reproducibility of scientific research, as different researchers make different decisions. A Bayesian multiverse is a systematic way of reducing these adverse effects and aims to make statistical analyses more robust.

We are looking for a research assistant to contribute to the development of bamojax (Bayesian modelling in JAX), our open-source Python toolbox for Bayesian modelling and model comparison. Throughout your employment, you will have the opportunity to work with others within our group to see what modelling choices they make, and how our new Bayesian multiverse tools can help with this. There will be weekly meetings with the PI to discuss the project's progress and next steps, as well as bi-weekly lab meetings.

You will have two core tasks. The first is to implement advanced methods for Bayesian model comparison in JAX. These techniques will then be used to systematically explore alternative models for user-defined statistical problems. The second task is to construct an efficient search procedure for variants of a given model.

Profiel

You have an MSc degree in computer science, data science, AI, applied mathematics, or a related discipline.

You have demonstrable experience with programming in Python and implementing statistical or machine learning algorithms.

You have experience with software development practices such as testing and version control with Git.

You have a solid mathematical background in, for example, probability, statistics, calculus and linear algebra.

You have good communication skills.

You have a passion for improving the scientific process.

Prior experience with Bayesian statistics and/or JAX is a plus.

Wij zijn

The Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour is a world-class interfaculty research centre that houses more than 700 researchers devoted to understanding the mechanistic underpinnings of the human mind.

PhD Position: Decolonising Reparations

Reageer uiterlijk: 2026-11-08

Wij zoeken

Recent developments like the Rhodes Must Fall movement have highlighted the need to address historical injustices and global inequalities, but responses so far have often been superficial. Apologies, like the apologies the Dutch government offered to the Moluccan population in the Netherlands last summer, are often made, but more material forms of redress are slow to follow or remain absent altogether. Current scholarly debates in relation to historical injustices concern the potential and scope of reparations, which are often prioritised by survivors but politically sensitive. So far there is no consensus or empirical data on how reparations could address colonial legacies.

This important question will guide your PhD research in the NWO-funded project ‘Decolonising Reparations: Transforming the Legacies of Colonialism’, led by Dr Sanne Weber, Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science. You will use participatory and creative research methods to investigate the impact of colonialism on affected communities within Indonesia and the Indonesian diaspora in the Netherlands, as well as what these communities expect from reparations for colonialism.

You will work together with participants on co-produced multimedia products about the potential role of reparations in addressing historical grievances. In addition, you will conduct interviews with a wider group of stakeholders and a vignette study with the broader population in Indonesia. You will receive training on participatory and creative approaches by the Principal Investigator. Strong knowledge of qualitative research methodologies and familiarity with participatory research approaches are an asset.

During your PhD, you will collaborate with the PI and a postdoctoral researcher who will focus on Belgium and the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa. By comparing these case studies and triangulating the diverse methods, the project will enable a better understanding of potential forms of reparations for colonialism. In this way, the project aims to contribute to the decolonisation of reparative justice theory to address the legacies of colonialism committed by Western Europe.

Your duties and responsibilities include:

Developing a concrete and feasible research project fitting the overarching theme and resulting in the defence of an article-based PhD thesis at the end of the 4th year.

Setting up and carrying out in-depth and independent participatory fieldwork.

Authoring and co-authoring publications with other team members.

Participating in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities.

Being part of the research team and contributing to the overall organisation and strategy of the team and the project.

Being an active member of the Department of Political Science and the Centre for International Conflict Analysis and Management.

As part of your PhD position, you will also contribute to teaching (max 5%) and will have the opportunity to work on components of your University Teaching Qualification (BKO) portfolio.

Your supervision team will consist of Dr Sanne Weber (main substantive PhD supervisor) and Dr. Haley Swedlund.

Would you like to learn more about what it’s like to pursue a PhD at Radboud University? You have experience with conducting fieldwork, collecting and analysing qualitative data, ideally in relation to the theme of this project.

You are familiar with Indonesia as you are from Indonesia or the Indo community, have worked or lived there, or have spent an extended period there.

You are willing to conduct several months of in-depth fieldwork in Indonesia.

You have a proven excellent command of written academic English.

You have experience with planning, taking initiative, organising events and presenting your work to a wider audience.

Desired:

You are trained in participatory and/or arts-based research methodologies.

You have experience working with communities at a local level and have a good command of Bahasa or another relevant local language.

You have proficiency in Dutch.

You have experience with basic quantitative methods of research and analysis.

Wij zijn

The Department of Political Science examines the complexity and interconnectedness of contemporary politics with a focus on legitimacy and institutional change. Distribution system operators (DSOs), municipalities and energy communities need high-resolution grid and consumption data to plan grid reinforcements, heat networks and local flexibility, but privacy law (GDPR), commercial sensitivity and regulatory uncertainty keep this data locked away. Hence, critical infrastructure decisions are being made with incomplete information.

Synthetic data offers a way out: realistic-but-artificial datasets that preserve the statistical, temporal and physical structure of real energy data without identifying real households or companies. But energy data is not like images or text: it consists of time series living on a physical network, governed by power-flow equations. Off-the-shelf generative models produce data that looks plausible but violates physics and is therefore of limited use for grid planning.

As a PhD candidate you will develop physics-informed, domain-constrained generative models for energy-system data, the core scientific contribution of the SHARE project (Work Package 3). More concretely, your work will involve the following:

You will design and compare deep generative approaches, UAEs, GANs, diffusion models/flow matching, and Gaussian processes for realistic load, generation and voltage time series.

You will embed physical constraints into generation: power-flow consistency (Kirchhoff's laws) as soft or hard constraints, operational bounds (voltage limits, capacity, phase balance), and network topology through graph neural network architectures.

You will build validated benchmark datasets and an evaluation framework covering statistical fidelity, temporal and spatial structure, physical plausibility and downstream task performance (e.g. train-synthetic-test-real forecasting).

You will collaborate with a fellow PhD candidate and a postdoctoral researcher on integrating differential privacy into the generative pipeline, balancing privacy guarantees against data utility.

You will contribute to an open-source synthetic data toolbox that DSOs, municipalities and researchers across the Netherlands will actually use.

This is research with a direct route to impact: you will work with real operational data from Alliander, with regular on-site visits and direct access to the practitioners who will use your models for congestion forecasting, spatial energy planning and flexibility assessment. You will publish at top machine learning venues while producing open datasets and tools with tangible societal impact.

You will be expected to spend a small part of your time (up to 10%) on teaching activities, such as assisting in courses of our computing science programmes.

Would you like to learn more about what it’s like to pursue a PhD at Radboud University? The atmosphere is informal, international and collaborative.

The SHARE consortium (funded by the NWO Knowledge and Innovation Covenant programme) brings together Radboud University, the Dutch Open University, DSO Alliander, national metrology institute VSL, Zenmo, Bronscode and the Municipality of Nijmegen, spanning AI, privacy engineering, energy systems, law and governance.

Postdoc Positions: Origins of Irreversibility

Reageer uiterlijk: 2026-10-14

Wij zoeken

We are looking for three postdoctoral researchers to join the interdisciplinary Origins of Irreversibility project: one in mathematical physics, one in theoretical physics and one in the history of physics. Together, you will investigate one of the deepest problems in fundamental science: how irreversible macroscopic behaviour can arise from microscopic laws that are typically reversible. The project connects statistical mechanics, quantum theory and gravitational physics with historical and conceptual research on entropy, randomness and chaos.

What makes these positions distinctive is the opportunity to pursue specialised research while being part of a genuinely interdisciplinary team. We particularly welcome researchers who are interested in crossing disciplinary boundaries: physicists and mathematicians who enjoy conceptual and foundational questions, as well as historians of physics who are interested in engaging seriously with the content of the science they study.

You will be an active member of RCNP. You will collaborate with the other postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates and senior investigators, participate in seminars and reading groups, contribute to workshops and conferences, and help build connections between mathematical physics, theoretical physics, history and philosophy of physics. There is considerable freedom to shape the precise research direction according to your expertise and interests, provided that it contributes to the overarching questions of the project.

The Mathematical physics position will contribute to the mathematical foundations of entropy, randomness and irreversibility, with possible directions including large deviation theory, algorithmic randomness, ergodic theory, quantum entropy, operator algebras and their applications to statistical physics and/or black hole thermodynamics.

The Theoretical physics position will focus on gravitational and holographic systems out of equilibrium, with possible topics including dynamical and cosmological horizons, gravitational entropy, Noether charge methods, holographic coarse-graining, chaos, black hole heat engines and quantum field theory in curved space-time. These two parts of the project are designed to interact closely: mathematical tools concerning entropy, randomness and operator algebras feed into the gravitational research, while problems arising in gravity and holography motivate new mathematical questions.

The History of physics position will investigate the history of chaos, randomness and irreversibility, from nineteenth-century statistical physics to the rise of chaos theory as an interdisciplinary movement in the late twentieth century. Possible themes include the relationship between Maxwell's and Boltzmann's ideas of molecular chaos and later mathematical notions of chaos; the circulation of concepts such as randomness, entropy and unpredictability between physics, mathematics, meteorology and other disciplines; the prominence of chaos theory in the 1970s and 1980s; and its longer-term methodological and conceptual impact. The historical research is intended not simply as a parallel study, but as a source of conceptual insight for the contemporary physics and mathematics in the project.

Profiel

You hold, or will have obtained before the starting date, a PhD in a field relevant to one of the three positions, such as mathematical physics, mathematics, theoretical physics, history of science or history of physics.

You have a strong research record appropriate to your career stage and the position for which you are applying.

You are able to conduct independent research and are enthusiastic about developing new research directions in collaboration with others.

You have a demonstrable interest in fundamental questions concerning entropy, irreversibility, randomness, chaos, emergence or closely related topics.

You are interested in interdisciplinary collaboration and willing to engage seriously with fields outside your own primary discipline.

You are communicative, curious, critical, loyal to colleagues and proactive.

You possess excellent written and oral English communication skills.

You are willing to participate actively in the intellectual life of the Radboud Center for Natural Philosophy, including its seminars, reading groups, workshops and visitor programme.

Wij zijn

The Radboud Center for Natural Philosophy (RCNP) is a research centre at Radboud University where mathematicians, physicists, historians and philosophers work together on foundational questions in the natural sciences. Its research focuses especially on determinism, randomness and emergence in modern physics. The centre brings together researchers from mathematical and theoretical physics and from the history and philosophy of science, and organises seminars, reading groups, workshops, conferences and an international visitor programme.

The three postdoctoral researchers will join the Origins of Irreversibility project funded by the John Templeton Foundation, which brings together Klaas Landsman, Manus Visser, Marij van Strien, Kian Salimkhani and other researchers at RCNP, alongside new postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates. Within the project, mathematical physics provides tools for understanding entropy and randomness, theoretical physics studies their role in gravitational and holographic systems, and historical and philosophical research critically examines the concepts on which these investigations rely. Close interaction between these areas is a central part of the project.

The physics and mathematics postdoctoral researchers will also be employed by the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP), in particular the mathematics department, and will benefit from the existing expertise in mathematical physics, high-energy theory, classical and quantum gravity, and black hole physics. RCNP and IMAPP offer an international and collaborative research environment with regular seminars and informal scientific interaction. Further, the historical postdoctoral researcher will be part of the Center for the History of Philosophy and Science (CHPS) within the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies (FFTR). CHPS brings historians of philosophy and historians of science together and has particular expertise in the historical development of the natural sciences, the relations between philosophy and science, and the epistemological, methodological and ontological foundations of the sciences.

Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science (FNWI), part of Radboud University, engages in groundbreaking research and excellent education.

PhD Position: Curiosity in the Classroom

Reageer uiterlijk: 2026-10-20

Wij zoeken

Curiosity is a powerful driver of learning, yet we still know relatively little about how curiosity unfolds in the classroom and how educational environments can support children in becoming curious and actively seeking information. In this PhD project, you will investigate curiosity in 10-to 12-year-old children within authentic educational settings.

The project combines experimental research, classroom studies and computational modelling to better understand what makes children curious, how they decide which information to explore, and how different ways of structuring learning environments influence curiosity and learning. Computational models will be used to characterise individual differences in information-seeking behaviour and to examine how these differences relate to learning in the classroom. A central aim is to translate insights from fundamental research on curiosity into educational practice.

You will design and conduct studies in collaboration with primary schools and educational partners, review the scientific literature, recruit and test participants, develop and evaluate educational materials and experimental tasks, analyse behavioural data, apply computational modelling techniques, and write scientific articles that will form the basis of your dissertation.

You will work closely with your supervisors, another PhD candidate investigating the cognitive neuroscience of curiosity, and a broader interdisciplinary team of researchers in psychology, cognitive neuroscience and educational science. You will also collaborate with schools, teachers and educational organisations to conduct research in real-world learning environments.

The position involves frequent communication with children, parents, teachers, schools and other stakeholders, presenting your work to national and international audiences, and contributing to teaching for approximately 10% of your time.

Would you like to learn more about what it’s like to pursue a PhD at Radboud University? This requires a good command of both Dutch and English, as the project involves working with Dutch-speaking children and schools and communicating research findings internationally.

You have experience with quantitative data analysis, preferably using tools such as R, Python, MATLAB, or similar software, and are motivated to further develop your quantitative and computational skills.

You are interested in curiosity, motivation, learning and information-seeking behaviour, and have an affinity for bridging cognitive neuroscience and educational research.

You enjoy conducting research in real-world educational settings and are comfortable coordinating research across multiple schools. This is a formidable challenge as we lack a blueprint that allows for a bottom-up engineering approach. At the same time, there is an experimental bottleneck: the number of ingredients (lipids, amino acids, cell-free gene expression machinery) prevents a trial-and-error approach where the complete experimental space can be explored such that a large number of experiments will include the correct solution to the problem.

You will develop a design-build-test-learn cycle, combining high throughput experiments and active learning to obtain synthetic cells with the desired properties. You will integrate liquid handling robots and high-speed microscopy with AI and machine learning to form stable liposomes from libraries of (novel) phospholipids that can robustly encapsulate cell-free gene expression systems. You will then expand this pipeline to optimise the yield and especially the robustness of the cell-free expression system. The result will be synthetic cells that can be used across the consortium to degrade plastic waste and transform waste products into valuable biomaterials.

Profiel

You have a PhD degree in synthetic biology, chemical engineering or a related discipline.

You have practical experience with cell-free gene expression systems and/or liposomes.

You take an interest in liquid handling robots, Python and Bayesian optimisation.

You are a team player and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary environment.

You have a strong publication track record.

You have a good command of spoken and written English.

Wij zijn

You will join Prof. Wilhelm Huck's group at the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM).
