University of Bern

The Universität Bern was founded in 1834 and is located in the capital of Switzerland. Approximately 17,500 students study at the university, spread over eight faculties.
Deadlines for nomination:
Apply for nomination to the International Office Law before 1 March in order to be included in the first nomination round of the next academic year (for both first and second semester exchange) After the first round selection takes place on a 'first come first serve' basis.
Availability:
Each year, one student may go on exchange to the Universität Bern for one semester.
Language requirements:
Courses are taught in English and German. A minimum B2 level of German or English language proficiency is required to take courses.
Before each semester there is the option to take an intensive German language course.
Course information:
All courses open to exchange students can be found on this website (use the advanced searching option). There are both Bachelor and Master courses available.
Classes at the University of Bern Law Faculty are taught either in High German or English (or occasionally, French), so students should not worry if they want to take classes in German but are not familiar with the Swiss German dialect. We do recommend at least a B2 level of German in order to attend law classes taught in German.
Exchange students can sort class offerings by language of instruction on the CTS website. Choose “Advanced Search” and then choose “Faculty of Law” under “Faculty”. Afterwards, you can sort the courses which appear by language, DE for German, EN for English, and FR for French. Note that HS2021 denotes the fall semester (Herbstsemester 2021) and spring semester is denoted as “FS” (Frühlingssemester).
Accommodation:
There are several students residences. As the number of rooms is limited an early application is highly recommended.
Check the university's website for more information about housing.
