Call for Papers: Bouncing Back

De uitwisseling van de missie
In de laat-negentiende en twintigste eeuw ontwikkelde zich vanuit de religieuze gemeenschappen in Nederland en België een indrukwekkende omvang aan missie-activiteiten, die niet alleen beperkt bleef tot de koloniale gebieden van beide landen maar zich ook verder uitspreidde over de rest van de wereld. Tienduizenden missionarissen en zendelingen - mannen en vrouwen, katholieken en protestanten, onafhankelijke en georganiseerde - vertrokken naar diverse landen, kwamen in contact met nieuwe culturen en richtten een groot scala aan initiatieven op buiten het religieuze domein. Denk hierbij aan zorg, onderwijs en wetenschap.
De laatste jaren is er binnen de wetenschap veel aandacht voor de grote stempel die de missie-activiteiten op deze landen gedrukt hebben. Maar de missie had ook maatschappelijke, culturele en religieuze impact op België en Nederland zelf. De transnationale netwerken en uitwisselingen hadden een veel grote effect op onze landen dan eerder werd geanticipeerd.
Traject congres 2022
Het Trajecta-congres zal dit jaar gehouden worden op 22 en 23 september in Leuven. Met het thema "Bouncing back" willen we graag aandacht besteden aan deze culturele uitwisseling. We onderzoeken hoe de missie-geschiedenis een integraal onderdeel vormt van de religieuze, culturele en maatschappelijke geschiedenis van de Lage Landen.
Onderzoekers kunnen tot 1 mei 2022 een voorstel voor een paper (max. 500 woorden) en een CV insturen naar de redactie van Trajecta: kim.christiaens@kuleuven.be

The Return of Missionaries in the Low Countries
In the 19th and 20th century churches and religious societies and associations in Belgium and the Netherlands developed an impressive missionary activity that was not limited to the intensive colonial territories of both countries, but spread out over the entire world. Tens of thousands of male and female missionaries - Catholic, Protestant, independent or organized - left for different countries; engaged with foreign cultures, and staged a variety of initiatives on different fields beyond the strictly religious realm, including health care, education, and science. Over the last past years, a multidisciplinary body of scholars has analyzed the impact and legacy of these missionary activities, mainly from the perspectives of the countries of destination or of the missionaries themselves. The expansion of missionary activities, however, also had an impact on society, culture and religion in Belgium and the Netherlands. The transnational networks and exchanges generated by missionary activities bounced, in different ways, back to both countries, and had a much wider effect than anticipated. These aspects entered the broader history of the Low Countries during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Traject conference 2022
The Trajecta conference will takes place on 22-23 September 2022 in Leuven. With the theme “Bouncing back” we are aiming to analyze how missionary history can be seen as an integral part of the religious, cultural and social history of the Low Countries.
Researchers are invited to sent in a proposal (max. 500 words) and a CV before 1 May 2022 to the editorial board of Trajecta: kim.christiaens@kuleuven.be
