Antonia Brico bij Pathé
Antonia Brico (1902-1989) was een Amerikaanse dirigente en pianiste, van Nederlandse komaf. Zij werd geboren in Rotterdam als dochter van een ongehuwde katholieke moeder en groeide op in een pleeggezin, de protestantse familie Wolthuis. Haar pleegouders namen haar in 1907 mee naar Amerika, waar Antonia later met passie een carrière in de muziek zou nastreven. Eind jaren ’20 was zij de eerste vrouwelijke dirigent ter wereld die succesvol grote symfonieorkesten dirigeerde.
Over haar bewogen leven is nu een speelfilm gemaakt (regie: Maria Peters, hoofdrol: Christanne de Bruijn). 'De Dirigent' (ook bekend als 'The Conducter') gaat op 25 oktober 2018 in heel Nederland in première.
In Nijmegen krijgt de filmvertoning extra veel luister, want het KDC en Pathé organiseren drie weken lang een expositie over Antonia Brico in de lounge van de bioscoop. De tentoonstelling is een reprise van de expositie die het KDC vorig jaar in de UB heeft gehouden.
Voorbeeld voor velen
Het absolute topstuk van de tentoonstelling is toch wel de dirigeerstok van Brico zelf. Het instrument staat symbool voor haar succesverhaal: het doorbreken van genderrollen en het uitgroeien tot een wereldster.
De dirigente was een inspiratie voor veel vrouwen. Zo schreef Eleanor Roosevelt, de toenmalige First Lady, over haar (New York, mei 1939):
"I meant to tell you the other day that I had a talk with Miss Antonia Brico, the one woman orchestra leader I know. She came to tell me of a curious situation. Our music schools take in women and train them until they are as good artists as men in the same field, but those who plan the personnel of orchestras tell her that the public has an aversion to women conductors and women members of symphony orchestras, and it is almost impossible for a young woman to be chosen on merit.
This seems to be a particular occupation in which sex counts primarily. I was rather interested, for I had always thought that where the arts were concerned, there was less of this particular kind of prejudice to overcome. I wonder if Dr. Gallup could help these young artists by taking a poll as to whether the public has a desire to choose its musicians according to their ability or according to their sex."
